The proliferation of social media, online gaming, online forums and cell phone usage have given today's children technological access never dreamed of just a generation ago. Children now have access to a staggering amount of online content, people and information. With these advances, parents now have even more challenges when it comes to keeping their children safe and happy. Further data from the US Department of Health states that only 52% of teens exposed to bullying or inappropriate solicitation, report the incidents to their parents. There are no numbers on exposure to inappropriate content but it is probably a safe bet that a lot of those incidents go unreported as well.

All of these threats are very real and, considering the amount of time children spend online, could present themselves on a daily basis. Here are some tips to help keep your kids safe, while bridging the gap between parental monitoring and proper education for your children.

• Kids must "friend" their parents on Facebook and allow them to be "followed" on Twitter. As teens get older, parents are certain to receive pushback but this is a surefire way to see what your kids are posting and what is being said about them. It is a fine line between monitoring and interference, so caution is advised.

• Do not let kids create their own personal email addresses until they reach a more mature, responsible age. Any account being created online, should be linked to the parents email. This will not only let you monitor what sites your children are registering for but will usually require that you authorize usage and provide you with time to either discuss any concerns with your children or deny the request.

• Make sure that your kids are educated on what's appropriate to post online and that they never provide contact information or post inappropriate or suggestive pictures of themselves. In today's world of social media, kids can be their own worst enemy. They shouldn't post anything online that they wouldn't want on a billboard, as this is essentially what online posts are. And removing or controlling content on the internet once it's out there, is not a simple matter.

• Young adults tend to want to add as many other peers as possible to their social media circles. But the reality is that many of these "friends" are not vested in your child's best interest and oftentimes become a source for ridicule or cyber bullying. Make sure your kids only accept requests from friends they know and trust.

• Strict rules and guidelines need to be set forth and agreed upon prior to allowing kids to go online. These rules and guidelines should also be revisited often as your children's online experience grows. You should set limits on what's acceptable, limit the amount of time spent online and make them understand what you will and will not accept in terms of behavior.

• Children are by nature naïve, curious and trusting. This is dangerous. So monitor your children's activities. Review their browsing history through the browser tools. You can also purchase programs that will enhance your monitoring capabilities.

• Set your parental controls on your computer. Every operating system and browser has a set of parental controls. You should be certain to set the appropriate limits or settings for each. You can also adjust the settings on Google and the other search engines to be strict, ensuring that only appropriate content is returned regardless of the search.

Educating yourselves and your children is ultimately the most important step you can take. Sit down with your kids and set ground rules. Revisit those ground rules every time your kids get a new device, create a social media account, or register for an online gaming. That is over double the amount recorded for traditional “schoolyard” bullying, which currently has an involvement rate of 12 percent. All bullying, online and offline, comes with its share of torment and, in the most serious cases, can result in suicide.

The study found that many kids fail to see how serious cyberbullying can be. A full ninety-five percent – out of approximately 17,000 – expressed that online activities shouldn’t be taken seriously. Mean remarks, in their minds, weren’t harassment that could cause harm, but rather a case of joking around.

Mean words do sting, though, and they can come with alarmingly regularity when exchanged online. In-person bullying at least has time and location limits. Before the Internet, a bullied student was more likely to be left alone once the school day was over. Now, though, a recipient of cyberbullying can be bombarded by hateful words at all hours of the day, in the form of emails, social network messages, and texts.

To make matters worse, it can be difficult to pinpoint the source of the bullying. Informational technology has made it easy to slip behind a guise of anonymity. Now, anyone can create a faceless account designed solely to spout mean things. While there are some methods available to help locate the source if he or she conducts everything from a private residence, it’s all too easy to engage in bullying without any real ramifications.

Anonymity and ease also makes it possible for people to bully who might not have been so capable in traditional cases. On the schoolyard, so to speak, power and popularity play a huge role in who bullies, and who is the victim. It’s very much about power differential.

Online, though, the dynamic changes a lot, according to the study from a university. Individuals are much more likely to slip into different roles online. In other words, they are more likely to move-with ease between being a bully, victim, and witness. They don’t have to stick to one role, which is more often the case in traditional bullying.

Schools are feeling the brunt of this phenomenon and, some argue, aren’t well equipped to handle the demands that come with it. An American university study talked with school social workers who argued that old bullying policies, most of which declare that you cannot intervene unless you’ve physically witnessed the bullying, are out of touch with the reality of cyberbullying.

They argue that new policies need to be put into motion. These initiatives need to reflect the differences in cyberbullying at different school levels, they say, with middle school and high school being more caustic than elementary school examples. They also need new standards by which they can responsibility intervene before it’s too late.

Social interaction online is new terrain, in many respects, and Internet-based bullying is no exception. To move forward, it’s important to recognize how serious and hurtful cyberbullying can be, and to consider new ways of stopping intensely damaging behavior that, in some cases, comes from an unknown source.

Berkeley High School is considering a controversial proposal to eliminate science labs and the five science teachers who teach them to free up more resources to help struggling students.

The proposal to put the science-lab cuts on the table was approved recently by Berkeley High’s School Governance Council, a body of teachers, parents, and students who oversee a plan to change the structure of the high school to address Berkeley’s dismal racial achievement gap, where white students are doing far better than the state average while black and Latino students are doing worse.

Paul Gibson, an alternate parent representative on the School Governance Council, said that information presented at council meetings suggests that the science labs were largely classes for white students. He said the decision to consider cutting the labs in order to redirect resources to underperforming students was virtually unanimous.

Science teachers were understandably horrified by the proposal. “The majority of the science department believes that this major policy decision affecting the entire student body, the faculty, and the community has been made without any notification, without a hearing,” said Mardi Sicular-Mertens, the senior member of Berkeley High School’s science department, at last week’s school board meeting.

Sincular-Mertens, who has taught science at BHS for 24 years, said the possible cuts will impact her black students as well. She says there are twelve African-American males in her AP classes and that her four environmental science classes are 17.5 percent African American and 13.9 percent Latino. “As teachers, we are greatly saddened at the thought of losing the opportunity to help all of our students master the skills they need to find satisfaction and success in their education,” she told the board.

The full plan to close the racial achievement gap by altering the structure of the high school is known as the High School Redesign. It will come before the Berkeley School Board as an information item at its January 13 meeting. Generally, such agenda items are passed without debate, but if the school board chooses to play a more direct role in the High School Redesign, it could bring the item back as an action item at a future meeting.

School district spokesman Mark Coplan directed inquiries about the redesign to Richard Ng, the principal’s assistant at Berkeley High and member of the School Governance Council. Ng did not return repeated calls for comment.
