Timely Teacher Talk

Not just lettuce

Many years ago our family was dining at an El Chico's and my daughter's boyfriend was unusually quiet.  In an attempt to make polite conversation, my husband made a comment about how great the boy's salad looked.  The kid looked at his bowl, paused a minute, and responded, "It's just lettuce."  This has become one of those ongoing funny comments that our family remembers and repeats at just the right moment causing us all to laugh all over again.  We don't even have to be talking about salads.

Conversations are like that to me.  Sometimes someone can say something that just sticks with me forever.  When I talk with a good friend, we might jump from one topic to another and never run out of things to say.

The other day when Joel wrote on his blog that he had resigned, I felt like one of my good friends had announced that he was moving away, and I wouldn't get to talk to him as much.  As it turned out, the post "I Give Up! 10 Reasons Why I Am Quitting My Teaching Job" was a clever April Fool's joke that included a lot of reasons why teachers might become frustrated with their jobs. After drinking my first cup of coffee, I reread the post, laughed, and realized that Joel was probably still employed as a band teacher.  I have always appreciated a good joke on April 1st.:)

Joel's post also made me realize something about myself.  I consider other bloggers my friends and look forward to reading what they have to say.  I learn from them, laugh with them, and share their concerns.  Making comments on their blog posts has become an important part of my life. It is especially fun when other readers comment, and a conversation gets started.  I also just love it when people make comments on my blog.  There is always room in life to squeeze in a few more friends!

I also have felt a bond with the bloggers that I follow even though I have never met them. I have learned so much from my blogger and twitter friends.

I need to learn more about twitter.  It is one of those techy things that I haven't tried. The other day I learned more about how to conduct a Google search from a blogger friend.  I am one of those who grew up without technology, so I have to work really hard at it.:)

Betty, you had technology when you were growing up, it just wasn't quite as advanced! Twitter is really not very technological as far as the user is concerned. I find that if you follow it, it can be awfully addicting and time-consuming, though...be warned!

Thanks, Joel.  I think the big difference is that the old form of technology was always easy to use. Plus, it didn't work a lot of the time.  As a kid, I rode my bike, played with paperdolls, and made mud pies.:)
