I can't believe it. Spam is making a come back! I don't mean spam on your computer. I mean Spam as in a food product. Both "spams" fall into the shunned category of life. Who wants spam on their computer? Who admits they eat, or shudder the thought, like Spam?
I heard on the news yesterday that due to the economy, people are once again considering Spam for their evening meal. This is a lesson for us all. If you hang in there long enough and listen to all of the put downs, your time will come.
It makes me think of something my sister said today. One of the popular people in high school talked to her for the first time when she was a freshman in college. After four years of silence in high school, this guy felt the need to find a friend in a large, unfamiliar environment. She also mentioned that she remembered students wearing their high school letter jackets in order to let other students know that they were once members of the popular set. All of this came up because she received an invitation for a high school reunion. The invitation had pictures of the popular people on the front enticing people to come so that they can find out more about their "favorites" from high school. They were once household names and want to make a comeback.
And then along comes Spam. Not only does it have something named after it, but people are actually eating it again. No fancy invitation. Just good old fashioned determination. In the days of early married life, I used to blacken it on both sides and load it down with ketchup. Oh, what a tasty treat. We couldn't afford much back then, so we paired it with mac and cheese. The good old days seem to be coming back.
It might be interesting for students to write a funny story using both "spam" words. Another idea is seeing how many words they can come up with using the letters from the word spam, or finding other words that also spell a word when written backwards. The possibilities just seem endless.:)
