50 things blamed on the cost of oil

A list of 50 things blamed on the cost of oil is worth taking the time to read.  The list by Tom Weber on The Wall Street Journal's Buzzwatch is complete with links and will definitely make you think.  You might even want to comment and add an item or two of your own.:)

The list includes things like school field trips, school lunches, and community college calendar changes.  Of course, schools are always one of the first groups to feel budget cuts.

The list of of 50 things being blamed on rising fuel costs could be the beginning of a meaningful cause and effect lesson for students.  They could add to the list by thinking of ways their own lives are changing.

Since there are both negative and positive changes connected to the cost of oil, this list could also launch a few compare and contrast papers.

The thing my students--and my kids--will complain about the most is the pizza delivery costs. It's pretty amazing--when you stop to think--how much oil is intertwined in our daily lives. Sounds like a great classroom conversation!

We ordered pizza Tuesday and noticed that the price of our normal order had increased by two dollars.  I hope the delivery guys are getting some of the extra money since they are having to put gas in their cars.  This might be an interesting math lesson.

This is from our paper, and is so true, especially for our local farmers.

I don't get what the price of gas has to do with less wine consumption, though.  Unless, people mostly drink wine at restaurants than at home?   Restaurant dining is certainly down.

Betty: I hear from a Bloggy Friend that you're a Pie Lover! I'm new to the Blogosphere, trying to combine homey touches with consumer and health news, too. Can I steal today's post from you? It's just the kind of consumer item I'm looking for! I would give TOTAL CREDIT to you, of course, and to the WSJ. Thanks in advance!

Veggie Mom, I just love your blog and am indeed a pie lover.  I love it when people value my posts, so yes, feel free to use any and all that you want.  By the way, I think I'm going to post a picture of the blueberry pie I made.  It turned out great.  Thanks for posting the recipe.

Dkzody, I'm not sure about the wine consumption link either except it might have to do with shipping.  You are probably also right about restaurants.  I read in the Dallas Morning News where several restaurants are closing.  We've had some of the gas thefts here in Texas too.
