It's just really awesome, by cracky!

I'm sure you've watched the YouTube video of Susan Boyle and the shocked looks on the faces of the judges and audience of Britain's Got Talent.  What a great lesson plan idea!  Teachers could start with the old saying, "You can't judge a book by its cover" and use the video as an opportunity to demonstrate to students that treating others badly if you don't like the way they look is just wrong.  Just think of the writing assignments that can come from a real life experience like Susan Boyle's audition.

Old sayings often have a ring of truth and help us to see that problems aren't always new.  This video could make a difference in how students see themselves and others.

Click here to read about Susan and see the video.  I tried to embed it in this post, but YouTube wouldn't allow it.

I could not agree more! I watched this video, and like everyone else, did not suspect she could sing based upon my judgements. I think it teaches everyone who watch the video that the saying "don't judge a book by its cover" is true. I think having a lesson plan with this in it would be great! I am sure there are good picture books that could accompany this topic too! I feel that teaching students about this topic could be a great unit--and there are so many things you could do with it!

Wow!!  I had never seen the Susan Boyle video before I clicked on your blog post.  (Actually, right before I started blogging today, I saw her briefly featured on CNN, and I said, "Who's That.")

But, as somebody who develops Web 2.0 lessons, atop core curriculum subjects, I can honestly say that you have hit the nail on the head.  Great lesson plan suggestions.  Thanks for sharing.

What a relevant lesson to teach on the 10-year anniversary of the Columbine school shootings... but to address the issue of acceptance and kindness in a lighter way.

I absolutely love that video, it demonstrates how us, as a society, are very judgemental and appearance is how we initially judge a person.  I believe that this video and/or topic of "judging a book by its cover" can be easily relatable to elementary students all the way up to high school students.  This video/topic can be used along with a picture book for younger students and can be used as a lesson for older students, because we all know that as students get older they begin judging each other and appearance is what matters most to them.  I believe this video will show students the importance of not judging a book by its cover.

I just adore Susan Boyle! What a set of pipes that gal's got...and what a positive message to send out to all those look-alike Barbies out there. It's OK to be different, ain't it?
