Mysterious Teaching

Insights behind the perils of being a teacher

Needy parents drive me up a wall.

I have some needy kids with very needy parents.  One parent emails me daily if not more often to remind me to do this for her child or that for her child.  She doesn't have time to help him at home and she doesn't understand the expectations for the class work.  "You mean you expect them to study for a test?  Aren't you going to help them?"  How many of the 20 assigned math problems do you expect them to do?  He cries every night because he doesn't get his addition.  How can I help when I don't understand the expectation?  I am only an engineer!  WTH?  They want me to teach all day and Tutor him for free after school EXCEPT they can't come and get him.  I have to bring him home.  I won't do it of course.  Not my job to be her babysitter.  Her kids have already been released from the official afterschool program because of her complaining.  Not the kids, mind you.  HER.  The kids are nice but quickly learning to be dependent on 'extra' help because their parents have convinced them they cannot do it alone.  What to do.  How do I get this parent off my back and get her to leave her kids alone?  Anyone?

About MysteryTeacher

I am 53 years old and have been teaching for 20 years this year. I have two daughters and two grandaughters and two son-in-laws, all of whom I adore. I love to travel with friends but I am now saving for retirement in about 14 years. I am becoming technologically educated. Since digital is the 21st century than I believe that teachers should too. We need to be educated enough to understand our students. I have a teaching degree, a masters degree, an ESL endorsement and a Gifted endorsement.
