Insights behind the perils of being a teacher

How to Paragraphs brought to life!

This is my favorite activity.  I share it with all the teachers.  I have my class write How-To paragraphs on making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.  The I take their final drafts and make it just the way they tell me.  If they don't say take the bread out of the wrapper, I spread the peanut butter on the bag.  It helps them to understand the process is important.  They need to get the directions right.  Then we eat the PBJs.  I let them vote on the kind of jelly I will bring.  I actually had a boy tell me he only ate blackberry and I NEEDED to bring that for him.  I was amazed at how rude that student was.  I was paying for this out of my pocket and he had a 'special order?'  I told him it was strawberry and that was it.  He said, "But I don't like strawberry.  I only like blackberry."  I told him he did not need to take part then.  I am truly amazed at the entitlement of these kids.

About MysteryTeacher

I am 53 years old and have been teaching for 20 years this year. I have two daughters and two grandaughters and two son-in-laws, all of whom I adore. I love to travel with friends but I am now saving for retirement in about 14 years. I am becoming technologically educated. Since digital is the 21st century than I believe that teachers should too. We need to be educated enough to understand our students. I have a teaching degree, a masters degree, an ESL endorsement and a Gifted endorsement.
