Mysterious Teaching

Insights behind the perils of being a teacher

What did they do 50 years ago?

I stand in front of my microwave and say, "hurry, hurry, hurry!" What would I do if I had to wait for an old fashion oven? I haven't used one in so long my daughter thought it would explode when she was here and wanted to use it. We had a gas oven and we had to light the pilot when we turned it on. It was scary. I don't think I could do that anymore.

I work 30 miles from where I live. What if we still had to use horses and carts? I would just live in my classroom Monday through Friday. The kids think I live there anyway. They always ask where the teachers sleep. Let's see, I have a microwave in there and a small fridge...I could do it if I had to. Just add an air mattress. Although by Friday I might smell a little ripe unless I could take a shower in the Nurses office.

I have to go to Kansas and visit my parents. They are in their 90's and can't see well or hear much. What do they do? Just sit. Wow! a week of just sitting. I am SO taking an entire suitcase of books with me.

They live in a small town and don't have a computer. Neither does my sister who lives close to them. I am going to go through withdrawal while I am there. How am I supposed to reach the real world. I am going down to their little library and PRAY they have computers down there. Although I can just imagine what my folks will say if I choose to spend hours down there. I am not trying to say my parents are boring...but!

Lordy I wonder how people lived back in the days before technology? What did they cook in? I seem to remember using a pressure cooker. That was our microwave of the 50's. It was fast. Arizona didn't have a lot of houses with air conditioning back then. No wonder so many people have summer homes up in the mountains. If we didn't have it here, I would have to sleep in the bathtub (full of water). That is what I did when it took the AC repair guy 4 days to fix my AC 5 years ago. Needless to say, I don't use him anymore.

Well, if you don't hear from me for a while...I will be back.

I used to have a pressure cooker until someone told me the lid could fly off from all of the pressure. Today I am the crockpot queen. Enjoy your time in Kansas. Hopefully, the library will have computers. If not, they will probably have some books. :) We will miss you.

Taking a break from information is good. In his book The 4-Hour Workweek, Timothy Ferriss recommends a low-information diet. I don't watch television, but I do spend too much time online. When school is going, though, I severely limit it. Practicing "selective ignorance" is a good thing! Enjoy.

About MysteryTeacher

I am 53 years old and have been teaching for 20 years this year. I have two daughters and two grandaughters and two son-in-laws, all of whom I adore. I love to travel with friends but I am now saving for retirement in about 14 years. I am becoming technologically educated. Since digital is the 21st century than I believe that teachers should too. We need to be educated enough to understand our students. I have a teaching degree, a masters degree, an ESL endorsement and a Gifted endorsement.
