My principal came in for a "sit-down" with me last night. She said I was moving too fast for my team (all of them new teachers to our district.) They couldn't keep up with me. Now, I have been doing the lion's share of the work. I was doing all the copying, colating, stapling. We were planning lessons TOGETHER but I go too fast? So, today I suggested that we break apart and they each do their own planning but they did need to keep up with the District Map. (Here be the crux of the problem.) It wasn't me that was moving fast. It was the curruculum map. The mappers "skipped" lessons they didn't think were important on the state test but were still tested on all the local tests. Some times, they want two lessons done in a day because they think it is easier that way. ARE THEY NUTS??? I don't skip things like "Logic" for instance. I do them all. Anyway two of my teachers were flabbergasted by the comment and complained bitterly that they liked doing it this way that it took the stress off them and helped them tremendously. So, it turns out it wasn't the team that complained but ONE member. I told her she could plan by herself and do her own copying but that we were trying to help not stress her. Now she has to do her own. Ok by us. That is 30 less copies to be made. She wants to put stress on Social Studies instead of Science. I had to remind her that Science was being tested this year and HAD to be taught. If she wants to stretch out on her own, she can, as long as she follows the district map. That's what I was doing...following the district map. Sometimes new teachers need to understand that you really don't get to do what they promised you in college. I have yet to pick and choose what I teach and I have been doing it 21 years.
