Insights behind the perils of being a teacher

Lock Down! This is not a drill! Actually it was...

Our District Cop came into our staff meeting on Monday and scared the bejeebers out of us.  He told us that just since school started THIS year, there have be 24 shootings in schools across the country.     TWENTY-FOUR???  I can't believe it.  Then he started on the lock down procedures, who does the hall sweeps, how NOT to open your door for anyone after you lock it.  If a kid gets left out?  Let the cops or the killer take care of them.  I guess I can understand that.  It is one or 31.  I guess I would protect the 31.  It is very scary though.  We are not to leave the outside doors unlocked during the day.  We have to leave some doors open because kids have to go to the office or nurse.  If we lock all of them, how will they get back in?

Now, we have to prepare the children for this scary business.  It is bad enough that it scared me.  Now I have to teach them without giving them nightmares.  So, I made an emergency kit.  I have a big white bucket for a toilet, big trash bags for curtains, good old fashioned duck tape for whatever, a trash bag for the curtain on my door window, water, (although not enough for all of them)  candy for snacks if the drill or event goes too long, I even have a bio-hazard suit in case someone does get shot  heaven forbid, or does the deed in their pants and needs to change clothes.  My daughter also gave me a survival kit from a jet.  It doesn't really have anything in it that will work for us but it is a great item to keep their minds off the danger.

Many of my students have moved here from California.  They have all been in real lockdown situations.  I can't believe it.  The only lockdowns we have had for real were when a kid at the high school had a toy gun and since our campus was next door, we were locked down too.

About MysteryTeacher

I am 53 years old and have been teaching for 20 years this year. I have two daughters and two grandaughters and two son-in-laws, all of whom I adore. I love to travel with friends but I am now saving for retirement in about 14 years. I am becoming technologically educated. Since digital is the 21st century than I believe that teachers should too. We need to be educated enough to understand our students. I have a teaching degree, a masters degree, an ESL endorsement and a Gifted endorsement.
