Insights behind the perils of being a teacher

Digital Native vs Digital Immigrants

Let's face it.  I know I am a digital illegal alien.  However, I am trying my best to learn more and keep as up to date as I possibly can.  We had a great discussion last night in my late meeting and one of the teachers said she resented being called a digital immigrant.  She knows as much or more about computers and how to use them then children.  The difference is, she had to LEARN how to do it.  It is naturally there  for the kids today.

Can a digital immigrant become a digital native?  I would think so.  We have naturalized citizens, why can't there be naturalized digital natives?

It is a competitive world out there.  If we don't keep up with the technology in our schools, we will be holding the students back from jobs that could be crucial to our world and economy.  They will have to learn it somewhere. Why can't the schools be loaded up technology-wise by companies so we can keep up with the Joneses?  They certainly don't give us any money for it through taxes.

I feel like I'm in that middle zone.  I'm not a digital native, but I moved into the digital world at a young age.  Maybe that means I am assimilated, but still an immigrant.

I love technology but realize that it is not always easy for me.  My favorite item lately is the GPS.  It amazes me that I can put in an address and be verbally told how to get there.  Schools do need to stay on top of technology because kids use it all of the time.  I have had students complain because the computers at school were so inferior to the ones they had at home.  They lost interest waiting for information to show up on the screen.

About MysteryTeacher

I am 53 years old and have been teaching for 20 years this year. I have two daughters and two grandaughters and two son-in-laws, all of whom I adore. I love to travel with friends but I am now saving for retirement in about 14 years. I am becoming technologically educated. Since digital is the 21st century than I believe that teachers should too. We need to be educated enough to understand our students. I have a teaching degree, a masters degree, an ESL endorsement and a Gifted endorsement.
