Mysterious Teaching

Insights behind the perils of being a teacher

What makes you happy?

I have a student that I can't please no matter what!  He is driving me crazy!  He doesn't like Math,  He reads fantastic but he doesn't like to read.  He doesn't like to draw.  He doesn't like to play games.  He doesn't like to...   Field trips?  No.  Didn't have an impact.  He knew he probably wouldn't get to go.  (actually, he probably would have but he didn't have faith in himself or his past was too recent to believe it.)

I am ready to just put him in a closet and lock the door!  NOTHING MAKES HIM HAPPY!!!  Nothing except tapping, banging, kicking, and making as much noise as possible to interrupt the class.  No he isn't hyper either.  He can sit still when he wants to or when I get mad enough at him.

I am not trying to make him happy.  Don't misunderstand me.  I have just noticed that no matter what I ask the kids to do, he throws his arms down and shakes his head. (I would like to shake his head)  I broke him of the "NO!" thing.  I won't let them say that when I ask them to get out their books.  He has a very bad attitude.

I jsut wonder what it will take to make him excited and happy?  I have tried a reward system to get him to change his attitude.  That lasted about half an hour.  He just couldn't stop making the negative comments and being hateful.  I know the family is what makes them this way.
