My Lesson Plans

child soldiers?

First, I need to begin by saying that I am a pacifist.  I grew up in a peace church (Mennonite).  I chose to be baptized into that church and am still a member there.  I went to a Mennonite college.  And I teach at a Mennonite primary school.  I believe that war is NEVER the answer.  All conflicts, large or small, can be solved if people practice respectul communication.  (Unfortunately, this solution is rarely applied.)  I am passionately opposed to the current "war on terror".  Having said that, I must also say that I am grateful and blessed to live in a country where I have the freedom to say such things.  I know that U.S. soldiers risk their lives everyday for this country.  I have a great deal of respect for those men and women, though not for their jobs.  I also know that many people are offended by such comments as I have just made.  Everyone is entitled to their opinion.

We hear regularly in the news of wars happening in other countries.  Many people here in our own country have seen, read, or heard of child soldiers fighting and dying in those wars.  It is atrocious and when we learn of this we are appropriately horrified.  No child should be expected or made to participate in something as heinous as war.  Unfortunately, we fail to recognize that this is also happening right here in America.  Yes, our own country is participating in the recruitment of child soldiers.  "WHAT?!?!" you may say.  Two instances in the past month have brought this to my attention.

First, my principal shared a conversation she had with one of our 8th grade boys.  In the process of enrolling for high school classes for next year, he was somehow convinced to join ROTC.  While kids (yes, teenagers are still kids) in ROTC don't, to my knowledge, get shipped overseas or carry weapons, they are, shall we say, strongly encouraged to continue into the military after high school.  This is a case of the United States military recruiting children.  And this IS NOT acceptable.

Secondly, I live across the street from a public high school.  As I head to my bus stop on the way to school I usually pass 3-4 dozen high school students on their way to the high school.  On Tuesday morning, during my 5 minute walk to catch the bus, I walked by 4 kids in their ROTC uniforms.  Chances are good that those 4 kids will be strongly encouraged to follow a path to the military.  Again, this is a case of the United States military recruiting children.  And again, this IS NOT acceptable.

How can something Americans strongly disapprove of in other countries be accepted as the norm in our own?  How can American parents permit and encourage their teenaged children to join an organization that will eventually push them into a death machine?  How can we continue to allow our young people to participate in an organization involved in activities that are sure to maim or kill them?  These are questions that I have trouble answering.  I ponder these things regularly as I pray for all Americans soldiers to come home.

Postscript:  We, as a people, are passionate about our opinions.  I have found that people are especially passionate about their opinion as it relates to the military, violence, war, etc.  So I expect that this post will prompt impassioned replies.  I would ask that if you choose to reply, that you remember what I stated earlier -- each person is entitled their opinion, in fact, our constitution ensures it.  I don't expect that everyone will agree with me.  But I do expect that everyone will respect my right to speak what I believe.  I would welcome a conversation with anyone -- whether you agree with me or not.

I must say I was more than disturbed by some of the things i read. First, an ROTC program is not the same as some nations in Africa or Asia arming children with AK-47's and turning them loose to kill.  Often, it actually helps kids that lack the focus or discipline to attend class find success, learn the skills to be a team player even though they have never been part of a team, and develops leaders who have the ability but would otherwise never be able to assume a leadership role.

As to the military recruiting children, if one wanted to be comparitive, it would be necessary to point out that religions the world over, including those in the states, participate in some form or recruitment at a much earlier age and much more aggresively than any miltary organization could ever hope to.  We call them missionaries and Vacation Bible Schools.  More wars have been started and escalated over religion than any other cause in the history of man.

I question the statement that war is never appropriate based merely on the fact that the bible describes the Children of Israel marching in to Canaan to forcibly take back the lands of their ancestors.  Keep in mind that this action was after wandering in the wilderness for failing to trust in God the first time.

As to the parents encouraging their children to participate in becoming part of a "death machine" I would encourage you to research what exactly our soldiers are fighting against in their War on Terror, especially the terrorist training camps that show video's of them rehearsing to take over schools and issuing orders in ENGLISH.  If you doubt what I am saying, visit a police website or go directly to the Department of Homeland Security site and check.  Impossible you say?  Tell that to the over 300 dead in Russia just a few years agon when terrorist seized a school and then began to execute children.  Thankfully our Constitution ensures not only your freedom of speach but our soldiers right to defend it from all enemies, foreign and domestic.  As you pray for our soldies to come home, please pray also for them to come home only after they have accomplished the very difficult job that they have been put there to do in the first place to ensure your continued freedom and safety.  Should they return home too early, the chances of seeing a terrorist attack against America's schools where your children and those of your neighbors attend will only be a matter of time.  The next time you see a member of the armed forces or even your local police officer on the street, thank them for the safety that you and your family currently enjoy. They risk their lives for your freedom and religous beliefs.

POST SCRIPT

Ask yourself a quick question:  Do you think that the "practice of respectful communication" helped those aboard the large jumbo jets as they crashed into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon?  Respectful communication did not convince the terrorist to land the plane they had hijacked instead of crashing it into a field.   There is a wonderful phrase that says "Those who beat their swords into plow shares will plow for those of us who do not."  Remember to thank those members of the law enforcement community and soldiers serving abroad.  They earn it every day.

I agree with you whole heartedly Nadia.  I believe that the military knows that they are getting in the minds of our kids early - and what can we do, the church do to stop that?  that would be my question.

I am excited about Memorial Day at work - Brian has scheduled several folks from CPT to talk about being a solider for peace and how MLK Jr fits into that.  He is so smart!
