Your opinions about Online Universities

Hey, Fellow teachers! Have you taken courses or even gotten a masters from an online university? Which ones are legit? What was your experience with them? Did your district recognize your college hours for a pay boost? Did you get a better position with your online degree?I am thinking about going that direction sometime in the future- but, I am wanting feedback from teachers who have had experience with this. I may even want to study something like business. Anyone out there study outside of education? Thanks, Samantha

Let me start by saying how much I HATED my on-line classes.  I only took them to see what it was like.  Never again.  It was too boring.  I need interaction.  I got my BA and MEd the old fashion way in classrooms.  I got my gifted endorsement in a weekend program at University of Phoenix.  I know they offer on-line classes because one of our teachers did hers there.

I want to say that MOST of the teachers I know who got their first teaching degree from UOP were pretty lousy teachers.  They didn't get enough experience through that program.  Masters is a different thing.

I took some online classes from a local community college for my AA and many online classes through Regis University for my BA. I plan on earning my masters through Regis online. Overall, my experience was positive and convenient being a working mother of two. In order to be successful with online classes, you need to be disciplined and plan ahead. You can probably get by with the bare minimum with online classes (just to get the grade) if you choose. I feel you get out of it what you put into it. Most classes you will communicate daily, bi-weekly, or weekly with class members and sometimes you will do group projects, not just individual work. I do feel that you are required to do more work (actual papers and research) with online classes. You will have to see for yourself...some like it and some don't. I personally prefer it. Good luck!

P.S. Regis does offer 10% off tuition for certified teachers. I know every penny helps!
