Lesson Objective: The student will learn the negative consequences of tobacco use and develop skills to resist negative peer pressure. The Activity: Students will have discussions with other students about tobacco use after they have heard smoking facts and figures and then post blogs. They will then have a chance to observe models of a person's mouth after they been smoking or dipping. These models are titled "A Years Worth of Tar" and Mr. Gross Mouth"; which can be purchased at http://www.HealthEdco.com . Students will then watch a video "The Teen Files-Smoking-Truth or Dare? which can be puchased at http://www.discoveryschool.com/teacherstore . Students will then learn ways to resist negative peer pressure by watching a powerpoint titled "So What is Bullying?" After the students watch the powerpoint, they will then have a chance to role play being the victim and the bully. After the role playing, students will post blogs about how they felt about being bullied. Blogging: Blogging is appropriate for this objective and activity. Teachers can blog about their experiences with this subject and lessons that they have taught. Students can blog about how the feel about smoking and peer pressure. We might all learn from those experiences. Obstacles working with this blog site: Students will need to be monitored for appropriate language and proper use of the computer. Students need to have permission to be on the internet from their parents or they will not be able to complete the assignment. Students need to be able to nagivate easily on the blog site. Students need to understand, when sitting up their blog page, to choose the blog site that will not cost them anything. Students need to stay on task and complete the assignment.
