My lesson plan for using Twitter in the classroom or library would include creating literature circles on Twitter.
Twitter Literature Circles
By: Angela Hardin
Libs 6960
Objectives:
1. Groups of students would join Twitter.
2. The students will discuss a piece of literature in depth. The groups would “follow” and “tweet” each other on Twitter.
3. Collaboration is the main purpose of this approach.
4. The Twitter Literature Circle will guide students to a deeper understanding of what they read through structured online discussion with written responses.
Tasks:
1. The discussion is guided by the students’ response to what they have read and teacher initiation.
2. The students and teacher may discuss events and characters in the book, the author’s craft or personal experiences related to the story.
3. The Twitter Literature Circle provides a way for students to engage in critical thinking and reflection as they read, discuss and respond to books.
4. The teacher will set a schedule. What chapters to read and by what date. When to prepare a response or add to the discussion on Twitter. The entire class will either read the same book or the teacher could allow groups to form by student choice.
Assessment:
The teacher will evaluate by monitoring student participation in the discussions, number of responses and depth of the responses. The teacher will also tweet with the students to ask questions and to help guide discussions.
