Meet the Teacher

I'm really interested in hearing what all of you do during Meet the Teacher. Do you just meet and greet or what? I usually hand out business cards with the school information, my e-mail address and extension and find out how the student will be going home. I also give out a sheet that I call Helping Hand that parents fill out giving me information about their kids...interests, allergies, etc. I let them look around the room and answer any questions they have about the upcoming year. What else do you do?

I greet the parents and students and give them a tour of the classroom. We also give them the classroom schedule, rules, forms to fill out so we can reach them (addresses and emails change really fast around here) and let them know how often they will receive progress reports and etc.  The multi-purpose room has the supply lists, school uniform shirts, PTO, and more that parents can glean information from.  I love the idea of handing out business cards.  I will do that next year.

They changed our system so my web site is down and I need to create another one.  They are suppose to give us training on the new stuff.

What I don't do (because it is elementary) is discuss all the subjects I will be teaching.  It would take too long and the parents came in at different times so it wasn't worth it.

In about a week, I will send home a letter with all the information they need to contact me and what my expectations are.

MysteryTeacher, do you have a website dedicated to your classroom that parents and students can access? I've been interested in trying this, but haven't decided how best to go about it. I envision a place to put weekly homework, upcoming events, etc. Thanks for your input. :)

For a primary age class (elementary)I get the students to complete an activity for their parents to complete on the night.  Some ideas include a self portrait that the students complete, students write a letter and their parents write one back, student made puzzle.

It certainly lightens the mood of the night.

I'm a little unorthodox.  I have our class procedures grid on the board, the class website on some computers, and a "graffiti board" where they can post their own opinions on a controversial question. I keep it really simple and attempt to engage them on a conversation about the subject.

Well, we had our Meet the Teacher Friday. I had 13 parents of 24 show  up. Most of them were really great and excited about what I had going on in the room. However, there were a couple (as there always are) who wanted to try to tell me how to run my class, how long their child would stay in time out, etc. It is a bit frustrating that they think they can come in and tell me how to do my job...wonder how they would feel if I showed up at their work place and started telling them how to do their job? *sigh* Oh well, enough on that. I can't wait to see how the first day with the kids goes tomorrow. I know we are going to have a challenging year, but I can guarantee that it won't be boring! I just love working with my kids and seeing how far they can progress in the short time I have them. :)

Please keep any other suggestions for Meet the Teacher going so we can add it to next year. Best wishes!
