Time & Paperwork

This started because I was saying how much I really did love substitute teaching and how much I really am enjoying my classes but that I was looking forward to a regular schedule without the "night-time" component -- wreaks havoc with the kids' schedules -- and Al (my dear hubby) said, "well... you may want to ask your friends what their evenings are really like because ..."

So, I know there is homework to grade and planning to do ... but what is this "bureaucratic tracking" thing?   I know that I saw a study once that showed, for elementary, an average workweek of something like 50 hours -- which is probably pretty close to a "normal" (non-workaholic) industry average, but I thought I'd check...

I think the questions I shall ask of all of you are these:

-  on an average night, how much "work" do you do after you leave school -- don't count parent-teacher conferences etc... and what kind is it?  Is it more grading papers/planning/communications than this bureaucratic stuff or the other way around?
-  I know that most teachers don't actually LEAVE school at 4 ... how late do you find yourself usually needing to stay ... how often do you have meetings that keep you there till ???

P.S.  I have made my decision -- I am not scared off by extra work -- YOUR experiences are right now the only way I can get a taste of the profession!!  So, I just want to know!!

I always found that I got more done at home and tried to leave school on time.  If I stayed at school to work, I usually found myself visiting with other teachers.  Of course, meetings and conferences are a different story.  Look for shortcuts when grading.  One math teacher showed me how she had her students make an answer column down the right side of the paper.  She could spot check their work and then check the answer column.  It saved so much time because I didn't have to search for the answers.

About bishopm

Really? Do I do this?? Where will this show up?? I have been home with the kids for 10+ years, volunteered a bunch in 05/06 which took me to substitute teacihing in 06/07 which took me to pursuing a Masters in Teaching this year ... and for many years to come!! I have two daughters, a computer science background (not current -- PCs were only in computer labs ... not people's homes ... when I was in late college), love to camp and love to interpret .... to the nth degree... music & lyrics.
