Times Past and Present
AutomobileOne of our Social Studies standards is that students will be able to compare changes in the community over time.  After watching a short video clip aand having a lengthy class discussion about changes in dress, transportation, roads, stores, schools, I asked my kids to think of one thing about our community in the past and what that thing is like today.  They were to illustrate the past and present.  One little girl worked very hard on her illustrations and proudly turned them in to me.  She chose to show dress, transportation, and buildings.  For the past, she drew a lady  dressed in black and brown who was riding in a horse and buggy . She was going to a very drab-looking place called the "Store".  The present picture showed another lady who was in a pink convertible.  She was dressed in a long, fancy pink and purple gown, had long brown hair blowing in the wind, and she was headed for "Club Pink".  It sure was a stark contrast to the old-timey woman!  I'm still wondering what "Club Pink" is, and if I can go too!

That is funny, I want to go too.  I have been teaching second grade for 13 years and I love this age.  Don't you sometimes just want to write a book about them???
