Teacher, Will You Marry Me?
About seven years ago, I taught a little boy who was just the best helper, was so respectful, and who laughed at all of my lame jokes. He was really one of the nicest kids you'd ever want to meet and, even though his family was going through a divorce, he was always smiling. He used to like to hang back after school and help me pick up the classroom and just talk. One afternoon, out of the blue, he says, "Mrs. Scarborough, will you marry me?" He pulled out a bubble gum machine ring and held it up. Whoa! I sure didn't see that one coming! An eight year old proposing to a 42 year old!? I told him that while I appreciated his offer, my husband might not like it so much. He looked as if he were weighing what I said, then he says, "Well, he's probably pretty old, so I'll wait for you." We lost contact after he went on to middle school, but I wonder if he remembers doing that? It was one of the sweetest things anybody has ever said to me!
