Inspired Once Again

Too often we loose sight of why we entered our noble and very important profession. It seems that this year was designated Bash the Teachers of America Year and it has been disheartening to listen to and read the negative comments people are making. Just yesterday our Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan published an open letter to the teachers of America to commemorate National Teacher's Recognition Day. I felt a tad better to know that he respects and values the work that teachers do. But his inspiring message came a bit too late for many teachers who have lost their jobs as a result of the harsh budget cuts in education.
Everyone knows and agrees that all of us have to sacrifice something during these hard economic times but why is it that our education system is the hardest hit. We have created a system of education where test makers and their lucrative companies have the upper hand. This week in many American cities students are being tested for an average of three hours per day for a span of three to four days. It has become very disruptive and expensive protocol to follow all in the name of accountability. All teachers appreciate the value of assessing how much students learn during the year. that has never been an issue. We just want to teach ideas and concepts that will enhance a child's entire life. Not just teach to fulfill the requirements for a test. I wonder if our legislators truly understand what is at stake when we rely so much on tests. But I will postpone that argument for another time.
A much more fulfilling set of words came from a student who did not even know it was the day to praise and show respect for teachers. She expressed her gratitude to me and acknowledged that I had made a difference in her life. she will be graduating from eighth grade this spring and she believes that I had something to do with it. This youngster has to deal with so much in her life and she is so mature because life has dealt her a heavy deck. She could have become angry and frustrated but instead she decided to go the extra mile to get good grades. She always has a great smile on her face no matter what may be happening at home.she is a fighter and believes she can conquer anything. She's very bright and a natural leader. I have witnessed her grow so much and she is a perfect example of what children can do. She does most of the chores around the house before she even comes to school. And when she gets home, she helps her mother in many ways like preparing dinner or doing the laundry. She loves her mother dearly and helps her through her illness in many ways. Her father works hard for all of them. He tries to show up for all the games, back-to-school nights, and special PTO meetings. Her father is her north and creates balance and stability in her life. She is bright and has taught me a few things about appreciating life. She understands the power of the present but knows that she is also a big part of the future. She inspires to make it through the week and I forget what one governor accused teachers of and what another is plotting to eliminate public education as we know it. She is like the gift you find inside another gift box. She is full of good surprises and keeps me focused. She is a source of inspiration. So, thank you for helping me be me and for being my constant reminder that there is hope for us after all.
