I am a graduate student studying in Melbourne, Australia, and I will be returning back home to Arkansas in December. It is about time I started really considering a career because there are so many things I want to do. I am almost finished with my third degree, but I always seem to go back to a past dream of becoming a high school English teacher. Many have talked me out of it, which is probably why I have lots of degrees but no career! If I decide to become a teacher, I will take the non-traditional route. I would love to be a teacher because I know it is one profession that has the ability to touch young adults. My life was shaped by teachers, and I would love to have a career that is capable of doing the same. It also offers a way to begin a family because the holidays are the same as your children's. The drawbacks are the politics behind teaching nowadays, dealing with teenagers (who I admit I may be a little afraid of) and of course the pay. I have also been told that teaching high school is intellectually non-stimulating, which would be difficult for me. Does anyone have any sound advice or personal experiences they can share with me that will give me direction. Thanks!!!
