Picking Your Battles?

    Picking Your Battles?

My position at my school is flexible, so sometimes I cover for teachers (just the 4th and 5th grade because those are who I work with during the week) if they will be late or need to leave early. The other day one of the teachers asked me to watch their class for about an hour at the end of the day. I said that was fine of course. The students had been working pretty well, and pretty quietly for it being the end of the day. I even let them sit where they wanted for the last ten minutes. When we only had about 5 minutes left before the dismissal bell rang one of the boys pulled out his ipod (which is against school rules to have in class.) He is older, due to being held back, and often tries to see what he can get away with. He also will disobey to try to get his teacher worked up about things. I decided since there were only 5 minutes left, and until this point he had been working (and was continuing to work with the headphones in) I was going to ignore this behavior. Some of the other students noticed and asked to get theirs out. I told them no, and when the commented that "Joe" had his, I just told them "I know," and went back to helping other students. I did not report this to his normal teacher the next day either, and so far I guess the kids have not because I have not heard otherwise from her. What do you other teachers think about this? Should I have enforced the rules? It would have resulted in defiant behavior and caused him to stop working. Or was I right to "ignore" it for the sake of keeping him "calm" and doing his work?
