My name is Samantha and I am a grad school student pursuing a degree in Special Education. For one of my finals, we had to pick a topic and come up with a way to start making waves toward a "solution". Differentiated Instruction is an area in education that has always sparked my interest. We have to try to come up with a way/s for new and old teachers to differentiate instruction effectively.

I am currently tutoring a first grade student who struggles with reading. She has strong phonemic awareness skills, but phonics and decoding are areas in which she needs to improve. I have noticed a boost in confidence each time I have worked with her, but she still has reservations when asked to read or write.

During reading, she often decodes words incorrectly do to vowel sounds. Currently, I am working to strengthen her phonics skills with CVC and CVCe words with emphasis on vowel sounds. We have also practiced manipulating and blending sounds. I have a very limited amount of time left to tutor this student. For our tutoring sessions, I like incorporate hands-on phonics activities as well as time for reading to improve comprehension and to strengthen word identification skills. Any suggestions, tips, or activities to strengthen her knowledge of phonics/vowels would be greatly appreciated.

Hello. My husband has worked as a high school Math teacher in the State of New Jersey for 12 years. He was not a very great teacher, he had a hard time about classroom management, the kids just wont be quiet in his class.
In the past, he managed to get Okay reviews to keep this job and got his teneure within the first three years of teaching.
But Two years ago, they had a new principle and department chair, ever since then, he had been having bad reviews from his supervisors. Now he is worried that they are going to fire him soon. I don't know whether it is possible to transfer from teaching to just a normal staff at the school doing non-teaching related work. Anyone? Any idea? If not easy, What can he do after being fired from teaching?! He is turning 50, not young anymore, it is not easy and not possible to start all over again as you were younger.
