For my master's thesis, I am exploring the topic of preschool programs in history museums. I have been a preschool teacher / assistant for the past five years and I have grown to feel that this group is often underestimated by the museum community and especially the history museums. I have been conducting research to test the viability of a preschool audience at history museum, but designing and implementing a pilot program at Hagley Museum & Library in DE. While the research I have been conducting has had positive results, I also want to gain information on preschoolers, history, and museum programs for preschooler from the teachers themselves. That is why I am contacting you all. I have set up a short survey online with questions that explore the topics I have discussed along with possible ways to create effective programming. I have focused on the areas of play, imagination, and personal context as ways in which to engage preschoolers in history. The questions also reflect this focus. I am hoping to gather surveys from 50 preschool teachers who have taught children ages 3,4, or 5.

The information I gain from your participation in this survey will be invaluable to me and I would greatly appreciate you taking the time to help me.

The survey is online and I am posting a link to it. If the link does not work simply cut and paste the address to your browser.

https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/6F3SHZT

Thank you so much for you help!!

Faith McCarrick

Candidate for Master's of Museum Education
University of the Arts, Philadelphia, PA
Issue in a classroom

I am an assistant teacher in a 3 year old classroom. They have just all moved up into our class so its still early in learning the ways of our room. There are a lot of children for a small area which makes things more difficult. There is one child that is very hyper active and makes faces at the teachers. I know this child is trying to get our attention because they do something and look at me to see if im watching. I know to ignore the little things like making noises and such as long as it is not affecting any of the other children. I was thinking of trying to spend some one on one time with the child and trying to get to know them more and note their special interest. This is going to be difficult with so many children but I will do what I can. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
eLearning course for preschool teachers

NURTURE preschool teachers' training course is an excellent way to upgrade one's knowledge in terms of the developmental stages among children, the age appropriate activities and getting the expertise as far as situational response is concerned.

Outer Space...Do or Don't...

I work in a multi-age room 3-5 and they have continued to show a great interest in Star Wars. Some things they have already been doing: bringing in the soundtrack on music share days, build space ships in block area, role play the characters and drawing pictures. To capitalize on the intrest I've considered allowing a study to be done on outer space to further their knowlege of space. Here is the problem... DAP says outer space is not appropriate because they can't touch, smell, hear... well you know. I'd like to know if anyone has any words of wisdom out there, I would love to hear it!

PBS Teacher Toolkits - Free

WNET, the PBS station in New York, is distributing free Teacher Toolkits for the PBS show, Franny's Feet.

As a classroom teacher, I liked to integrate children’s literature with Math, Science, Social Studies, Art, and Language Arts. Every time that I wrote an activity sheet for a book, I always felt like I was reinventing the wheel. Then, I had the opportunity to write eight social studies textbooks for a major book publisher. I included enhancement and enrichment activities that used literature. I included ways to use literature in my workshops and the feedback was positive. Recently, my first children’s book was published, Tofu Ling, with Raisykinder Publishing. I and the illustrator, also a teacher, wrote activities to enrich and enhance the story and the publisher printed them at the end of the story. Also, at the Raisykinder Publishing website we created activity sheets that can be uploaded, saved, and printed for free in the pdf format to coordinate with each of our books. I was hoping that I could get some feedback on what teachers thought of the activities, the concept of putting activities at the back of the book as well as free downloadable activities on the website. The website is under Raisykinder Publishing – if you can’t find it let me know. Thank you
