I was told by my principal that he was there to make my school a "student and community friendly school NOT a teacher friendly one". Note the emphasis on not... Now how I am supposed to feel? Multiple teachers have stated they felt as though we were not being supported and then the principal said this to me... I have felt no support since the year started. He told a parent that a colleague and I had not handled a situation well and that he was there for the parents support and that he would speak to us... This was overheard by another teacher who told me afterwards.... I am so overwhelmed and miserable because everytime my department (special education) discusses a student with the principal our suggestions are always 'wrong' and then he demands we do something else...not always what is on the IEP... this is illegal... I am so unhappy and confused.

I can tell you, you're not the only one. I'm sure that is not much comfort at all.

You're not alone... I teach High School art and drama and when I asked for some financial support for a new photography program, my principal told me, "That is what the magnet schools are for." His priority is the athletics program. I took matters in my own hands and got community support to start my program. As far as the administration, I'm just a fly on the wall.

How do you stick with it when it seems like everyone is against you? I try to be an advocate for my kids and do what is best for them but it just seems to make matters worse... What do I do?

Some years are tougher than others. I would document everything and talk to the school counselor about specific concerns. Being an advocate for your students is extremely important to me. Do you have a close teacher friend that could observe and give you any helpful hints?

I think sometimes admin and principals are looking out for their own good and pay check instead of what is good for the teachers on the front line. It's a shame.

Hi
I don't think it is a very good idea to hug students because you are giving them mixed thoughts - hugging should be only for family or close friends.
