This learning center is designed to help math students understand the primary ideas behind basic division and teach students to use language to create division story problems.

Common Core Standards:

3.OA.2 (Interpret whole number quotients as objects)

3..OA3 (Use multiplication/division to solve word problems to 100)

Learning Objectives:

SWBAT understand the idea that division is a fair share.

SWBAT read and understand division word problems.

SWBAT write division word problems.

Lesson Plan and Tips:

Use the dividend of 12 to model how to answer the word problems,write your own word problems and complete the fact family triangles.

Allow students to work in pairs or independently to answer the word problems, write word problems and complete fact families for dividends 20-60. This also works great as a center!

Teacher Resources and Preparation:

Cut out the items on the following ten pages and place into plastic bags. Use packaging tape to attach the dividend star to the bag or just insert it into the bag as well.

Your students will love that this activity hands-on! I've also include basic division notes, vocabulary cards, strategies for teaching and sentence prompts to help student word division problems correctly.
