• re: Underfunding!?

Also as an aside: I mentioned we spend 7000 dollars a year per kid in America on Education. That could pay for 2 years of private school in any one of them in a 50 miler radius from here. And, they are meeting standards or exceeding standards.

  • re: Underfunding!?

There's also a book called The Underground History of American Education which proposes the real purpose of the way we currently have our education system set up may not be to help children succeed at all. Google it and you can read it online for free. Yes, I'm somewhat of a non-conformist because I don't believe the way we have been doing things ...

  • re: Underfunding!?

I guess my point was: We spend more than 7000 dollars per kid per year in America. More than 7 times the rest of the world in education....yet we are falling behind. Is it really the funding? Or are we spending more time (and money) on other things?

  • re: What is your grading policy?

I'm sure you can agree however that NCLB is a one size fits all "fix". They are assuming that every child learns the same way as every other child. We don't really bother with NCLB, considering we are not government funded. However, we don't leave kids behind either. We just make sure all needs are met for all students.... My mentor ...

Wasn't single anyone out. Just commenting on the education, one-size-fits-all, system as a whole. I know there are schools that don't sort, but that is the overall goal of the education system....the strong succeed and the weak sink.

  • re: What is your grading policy?

We use letter grades and a 100% scale. We don't have a school district breathing down our neck, but we do meet state standards and we give the STAR test in April. As far as normalcy is concerned, that's where it stops. Our kids are grouped by their ability. A "2nd Grader" may not be reading from the 2nd grade book but out of the 1st ...

  • re: Introductions

Welcome! This is supposed to be a place for teachers to share ideas, thoughts, and life experiences. I live in a garage apartment at my parents house, though, not quite as rent free. I'm in school to though. From what I gather, school never ends for teachers. Good luck with your goal!

  • re: Tax Free Teachers

That sounds good except what's wrong with making all teachers tax free? I believe in (the good) public school teachers, but private teachers spend money on their classrooms and other things that would normally be paid for by tax dollars. I pay taxes too and so do people who send their kids to private school. Should they not be entitled to the same ...

  • re: It's been awhile....

I don't moderate comments and everyone is entitled to their opinion (within reason). I don't mean to burst anyone's bubble, but there is no "perfect teacher". We all have strengths and weaknesses.

  • re: Underfunding!?

Perhaps then we need to change the WAY we fund schools...
