Themed Binder Parent Letter and Overview Sheet

You all remember my themed binder sets I recently created and posted in my shops??

I received an email from a purchaser about adding a parent letter to go along with binder sets. I thought this was a super idea so I decided to make an overview sheet and parent letter to accompany the units. It is an editable powerpoint document. It might even be a good idea to add a place for your parents to sign and return the letter to make sure they have seen it.

Educational Site "A"

Utilizing fun, interactive, and educational web sites in the classroom and at home is necessary! Why you ask?

Well, besides the fact that it is indeed 2012, our students were born and immediately exposed to "boocoodles" of technology gadgets and gizmos that most of us probably couldn't fathom being invented when we were kiddos! Boy would I have loved some of today's "toys" when I was a tot! MOST importantly, we are all learners and we learn in different manners! I have to have interactive material and visual material if you want to teach me something!!!! Lol! Students need stimulation!

Since they come to us with a wealth of knowledge in technology by middle school and high school, and already exposed to tons of it from birth on up, we have to incorporate it into our lessons today! It's what they know!

THIS IS THE 1ST OF A SERIES OF POSTS in which I will provide a cool teacher site or student interactive site of some sort that you can use in your lessons! My plan is to do at least 26 (# of letters in the alphabet) and title them by letter. Today's Post is obviously "A" to represent day #1!

Some posts will feature how to use the site, maybe a handout to go along with a game or activity on a site, a printable for students to use in a web quest type assignment, suggestions for use of a site, etc.
The possibilities are endless!

So, please stay tuned for future ideas, tips, tricks, places, and spaces for utilizing technology in the classroom!! I am pumped about this, as I know I'll be learning lots of new things to do as well! A mini-course for me as well, if you will! (LOL)

Valentine's Day Ideas

So, I hate that I haven't been able to blog much this past week. I have had some pretty serious things going on with my family and I just haven't had the time or the energy to post. I have tons of stuff I plan on posting but I'm going to start with the most important first! Valentine's Day stuff!

A while back, I was inspired by What the Teachers Wants to steal her pumpkin present idea to help quell the nutty children during the Halloween season. Click HERE to see her post! This has inspired me to adapt the idea for Valentine's Day! I plan on using of these to fill with small trinkets. As the day goes on, I will pass it along to different desks of students who are following rules and expectations, being kind and considerate to others, and respecting the school environment.

I was thinking I would fill it with pencils, candies, erasers, stickers and other fun things! When a student receives the Valentine Present, they will get to choose one thing from the chocolate box. I am so excited to try this out and see who it works!

Another fun thing I plan on doing on Valentine's day is reading this adorable book, "How Do You Hug a Porcupine?" by Laurie Isop, that I found at Barnes and Noble. SOOOOO freakin' precious...

It is a cute rhyming story about a boy who discusses hugging all kinds of animals, but he wonders how to hug a porcupine. He comes up with a clever idea to solve his problem by the end of the book. I am soooo in love with it!

I thought it would be fun to have students write about how they would hug a porcupine, so I made this cute little writing page!

Problem Solving Words and Strategies

So, I am sure many of you have seen these on Pinterest or The Teacher Wife's page.

And maybe you have seen this from Oh Boy, 4th Grade.

Well, I have taken these two lovely ideas and made a perfect marriage! After seeing these two wonderful ideas, I thought it would be a great thing to have glued inside my students math journals!

Let me know what you think! I hope I didn't break any rules by using these two ideas and combining them into one...

Creative Ideas

Babbling Abby's Teacher Week topic today is Creative Ideas. (How about that use of alliteration!?) I am going to share some ideas of things I do in my classroom that make life a bit easier for me and hopefully will for you too! Some of these ideas are actually activities that you can use when teaching content areas.

1) Gem Jar - This is a classroom management idea I use to reward whole class behavior. I have a cut out of a jar taped to my whiteboard. There are also a bunch of magnetic gems. When the class WOW's me, I add a gem to the class jar. When other classes compliment our behavior in the hallway, the cafeteria, or Related Arts, I add a gem. When the class fills the whole jar, I let them vote on their class reward. We've done Pajama Day, Popcorn Party, Brownies, Ice Cream Sundaes, Movie, etc...

2) Flow Charts - I love flow charts! They are great for all subject areas and for classroom procedure. I made a flow chart this year for my morning procedure which is pictured below! I also have a print out of the flow chart for their PRIDE Planners. You can use flow charts for a ton of different math skills (adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing, etc...) The possibilities are just endless.

3) Finger Language - I am sure many of you use your own version of this, but I like to keep it simple. I just have three hand signals. 1 finger for a question, 2 for the restroom, and 3 for using the trash can. I love not having children ask me if they can go do something. This way, I can just acknowledge their request in silence so as not to disturb the rest of the friends while their working. =)

4) Classroom Map - In third grade, we teach South Carolina history and geography. This year, I decided to make a blank giant map of South Carolina posted to one of the front bulletin boards. At the start of the year, we will mark our location and a few other major cities. As the year goes on, we will add important locations, events, regions, and people. For example, we teach about the 3 major Native American tribes in SC, so we will mark their locations as we discuss each. There are also 6 regions of South Carolina which will be added to the class map when we come to it. The map itself was made on laminated poster board. This way, I can write on the map with Vis-a-V or white board markers so I can wipe it clean at the end of the year and use it again!

5) 8 Step Model Drawing - This is the method used in Singapore where problem solving is a whiz due to the use of this method. I implemented it last year and have noticed a significant difference in my students abilities to understand and SOLVE word problems correctly. The thing I love most about this, is there are steps and children can feel successful when completing the steps. For more information on Singapore Math, visit this link. I purchased this book to help guide me last year when I was just starting out. I really recommend it!

6) Wheel of Choice - This is an idea I got from a previous teacher to help children learn to solve their own problems instead of always "tattle-telling!" This is a great idea for students to build a better classroom community and teach kids more responsibility for their actions. This isn't my actual wheel (mine has more choices), but this is a good example.
