So on my off weeks of attempting the Words Their Way spelling program this year I am implementing a vocabulary series of lessons. I decided to use words that related my language arts, math, social studies, and science curriculum. Now I've had to decide what activities I am going to do in the classroom with the vocabulary words. If you look in my prior posts I came up with a Tic Tac Toe board type point system for homework. But how do you help students understand the meaning of each word as an activity in the classroom?

One way is to use this sheet below and have students work in pairs to complete a vocabulary card on one of your words. Students will look up the most common definition, put the word in a sentence, come up with synonyms, and sketch the word in action.

Vocab Word Definition

What are some classroom vocabulary activities you do? What do you find most effective for student understanding of the meaning of words?

I have just survived my first week and I must say, it went pretty well! On the alternating weeks I am focusing on vocab. I have created this type of Vocab Pursuit to match my Words Their Way Spelling Pursuit. You can check that out on my TpT store.

This Vocab Pursuit gives students the chance to choose what activities they would like to complete. As long as they accumulate 30 points each week they can have the freedom to do what activities fit best into the weekly vocab words.

I plan on pulling words from my curriculum and from our state MCAS test.

This pursuit will be stapled into a notebook each week so that activities are contained rather than scrap papers being attached. I also created a mapping and illustration page to use with this for the illustration and mapping activity. (These were featured in a former blog post).

How are you tackling vocabulary this year? And how often? I am not sure if every other week is a great plan.I'm always willing to try!
Don't forget to enter my Giveaway! a $10 Starbucks gift card, find it under the giveaways tab, just a few days left.
Have a great weekend everyone.

Vocab Pursuit
I linked up with Teaching Blog Addict today through Freebie Friday to bring you this product.

Hi everyone! Wanted to share a fun little freebie I created to help my students {especially ELL}

to practice, review, and build word knowledge.

This organizer helps students see the "big picture"!

It's perfect for differentiated instruction, can be used during guided reading, and/or centers.

click on the image to grab this freebie.

I'm really a big fan of having students illustrate the words since I'm such a visual learner myself, I want to make sure they can create a mental image for the words.

In previous years I used to bind students' sheets together and turn it into a little dictionary for them.

Hope you find this helpful!

Have a great week!
