Chinese New Year – Sing, Dance, Create!

Gung Hay Fat Choy from Macaroni Soup with Miss Carole!

Soon it will be Chinese New Year (on the Lunar Calendar), and I’d like to share some of the fun things I do with my students to teach them about this very colorful and interesting celebration. With books, songs, art projects and simple food it is easy for young children to appreciate and enjoy a holiday from another culture.

Over the past 5 years I have assembled music, art and literature that are developmentally appropriate for 3 – 6 year olds.

2013 is the Year of the Snake, and the New Year’s Celebration begins on February 10. You have time to prepare! Typically the “party” lasts 15 days.

To prepare for the New Year, everyone must clean. Sweep out the old year, then don’t clean for the first few days of the New Year or you risk sweeping away your good luck! (Ok – the *** crumbs under the snack table gotta go, but you get the idea!)

Now decorate! Make papercuts of red paper to hang on doors and windows. Create a dragon head to lead your Dragon Dance line around the room. Make a lantern - see Maggy's blog from Dec 27.

Make a gift for the Kitchen God so that it reports in your favor when it returns to Heaven! Sticky Cake (not STINKY CAKE! But you could use my song - "We're going to make a sticky cake! Put some honey in the sticky cake!") Anything made with honey is especially good! Even a drizzle of honey on a *** or bread will work.

Create a money packet or leisee from red paper decorated with gold writing or stickers. During Chinese New Year, children receive “lucky money”…even a penny will do!

Tell the ancient legend of Nian (pronounced n-YEN.) This ferocious sea creature once tormented villagers by swallowing several of them in his large mouth in a single bite once each year. One year, an old man appeared in the village on the Eve of the New Year. He said he would chase Nian away. The villagers fled anyway, leaving the old man alone to face the beast. When Nian emerged to wreak his usual havoc, the old man lit firecrackers, lit bright lanterns and waved red banners. The beast was frightened and ran away, never to be seen again! When the villagers returned, the old man was gone, but they found the debris from the firecrackers and the lanterns and banners hanging on their houses. From then on these three items were used to celebrate the New Year!

When I told this story this week, the children were wide-eyed. I emphasized that it happened before they were born (before their parents and grandparents, for that matter) and Nian was never seen ANYWHERE ever again!

BOOKS: For preschool and Kinders, I like DRAGON DANCE by Joan Holub. The lift-the-flaps format is great for reading to children.

For younger 3’s and Toddlers, try LANTERNS AND FIRECRACKERS by Jonny Zucker and J.B.Cohen.

MUSIC: Nancy Stewart has written and recorded a magical song, “Gung Hay Fat Choy”. She offers it on her website as a FREE DOWNLOAD – yes, folks, FREE!!! There is also sheet music there, too!

With my students, we do this song with scarves. We weave one end of the scarf in and out our fingers, letting the rest of the scarf fall toward the ground. It could also be done with crepe paper streamers. Here’s our dance:

Gung hay fat choy, gung hay fat choy (clap on gung, move one hand to side parallel with head, repeat on other side)

Sing Happy New Year, Gung Hay Fat Choy! (repeat actions above)

During the verses, act out the words:

Verse 1: we bow to each other and say “Ni hao” (hello) to each other.

Verse 2: use your scarf as a broom, sweeping.

Verse 3: hold up both hands in front, palms upward, tip one up, then the other.

Verse 4: Put hands to sides of head to make dragon horns, dance around the room!

ART: Copy a dragon’s head onto heavyweight paper or cardboard. Children may color or paint the dragon. Cut out the dragon head. Staple a strip of the paper to the back of the dragon so that the children can slip their flat hand in to hold it up. We use the scarf in one hand, dragon in the other with my 4 - 6 year olds. The pattern in the link above is excellent.

MORE IDEAS:

· Downloadpictures of the different animals that are celebrated each year, identify each one with your kids. What year were most of them born under? Who’s a Rat? An Ox? A Dog?

· Make long spaghetti-like noodles to eat. Long noodles for a long life!

· Cut spiral snakes and hang them from the ceiling! It’s the Year of the Snake, remember?

· Play “Where’s the Snake”- hide a rubber snake in the room and let everyone hunt for it! OR, hide a few gummy snakes, each in a Ziploc snackbag – and you can eat what you catch! Sharing is encouraged, so have a small knife ready.

Today, Chinese New Year is about family reunions and wishing everyone good fortune in the coming year. Have the children make New Year’s card for their family, wishing them luck and prosperity!

I am honored to be part of a special Blog Hop: A Season of Giving: 31 Days of Service. It is important to teach young children to do service and develop compassion and kindness towards others. During this rushed season of shopping frenzy, do you wonder if there is a way to feel more gratitude and peace? Doing service will bring you a feeling of contentment and enrichment. You will feel connected to others of similar spirits and understand the true meaning of Christmas.

For this service project, coloring books and drawing pads were purchased at the dollar store. I had already purchased crayons and notebooks when they were reduced to $.20 during the summer back-to-school shopping price. These items will be donated to the Department of Human Services which gives them to a counseling center and to a shelter for abused women and children.

A quart jar holds around $100 or more

We have a coin jar and throw our extra change in it during the year. It holds around $100 to $150. We like to use this money to help someone who needs something and perform Random Acts of Kindness. Young Children Can Be Taught to Save & Give

Coloring is soothing. It will give children something to do while they wait for services, or let them know that someone cares during times of stress and disruption.

Here it is the Monday after a terrible tragedy took place just three days ago and my heart continues to ache for the families of those who lost their lives at Sandy Hook Elementary School. It also aches for those poor children who witnessed this tragedy. I will continue to send my love and prayers to the city of Newtown, CT and I ask that you do the same if you are someone who prays.

Stocking Stuffers for Kids: A Teacher's Top 10

As a former Kindergarten and Special Education teacher, I can promise you that teachers would greatly appreciate your child receiving these stocking stuffers. Of course, keep some at home, but sending a few more supplies to school would certainly help a teacher and her students. Here is my Top Ten List:

Crayons and Pencils: I know for a fact that one or two boxes of crayons won't last the entire school year. For a bit of humor, see 10 Crazy Ways Kids Use Crayons. And pencils are chewed on, purposely broken and cut upon, while the fascination of sharpening appears endless.
Markers: Buy washable markers for children and Dry Erase markers for the classroom. Many teachers have small white boards for their students.
Glue bottles and sticks: One or two bottles will not last the entire year due to practically daily gluing activities. Children love to squeeze lots of glue to make anything stick. It must be the squeezing motion they enjoy or they just haven't grasped the concept that a little dab will do ya.
Playdough: Children's favorite malleable teaching tool is playdough. It helps develop fine motor skills and has many other benefits. To read more about the wonders of playdough, and my favorite No Cook Recipe, click here.
Scissors: Odd how they are lost so easily. Sometimes kids sneak them home in their backpack because they can't find their scissors at home - or don't have a pair. Yes, cutting crayons and using them with playdough will make them duller, but still buy child safety scissors and supervise so they don't give themselves a haircut.
Notepads and Index Cards: Little notepads can inspire children to write. They can be used for Blue's Clues, Scavenger Hunts, and I Spy games. White or colorful index cards are great for labeling items around the house like a pet's name on their habitat, Toy Box, Book Shelf, Art Supplies, Collections... This helps your home have a print rich environment, teaches the reading/writing connection, and helps children learn to read.
Simple Science Tools might include a magnifying glass, bug box, LED Headlamp, flashlight, and bug net. These fun items will encourage your little ones to go outside and explore, discover, and learn about their fascinating world. What child doesn't love to make collections or look at the wonderous activities of small critters?
Jump rope and balls. Exercise releases endorphins, the feel good hormone, helps develop fine and gross muscles, and helps children get a better night's sleep.
Sidewalk Chalk: Children can learn letters, how to print their name, play hopscotch, and develop socialization skills while they are outside in the fresh air with some chalk. Neighborhood children will draw around if you provide sidewalk chalk and a smile. Variations of hopscotch can teach numbers, letters and words. Your child could lie down on the sidewalk while you trace around him, then encourage him to fill in the area.
Fine Motor Tools might include pipe cleaners, stickers, pom poms for sorting and counting, or a scoop and funnel for pouring sand or rice. You might be amazed at how long a child will pour rice through a funnel.

It is a good idea to buy extra school supplies during the summer when many stores compete for your business. A mom told me that she buys 30 boxes of crayons during the summer school sale and her child gives each student in his class a new box for Christmas.

You might also consider buying extra crayon/pencil boxes and fill them with the basic school supplies. Children enrolling or transferring after the school year begins often come with no supplies. It helps ease their anxiety to have a pencil box prepared. Your child's teacher will also be grateful.

Yes, teachers do have a small budget for classroom supplies but it is not nearly enough to cover what they need throughout the year. Every contribution is greatly appreciated.

I was always touched to see a child beam when they received a new box of crayons. We adults sometimes forget that children depend upon us for their teaching tools. These are inexpensive ways of helping children learn, grow and develop through playful activities using their imagination and creativity. Santa, are you listening? We've been good!

Free Countdown Calendars

So I got a little carried away. I wanted to make just one countdown calendar for my little guy because he keeps asking when Christmas is. And I thought what a fun freebie for you all! Gingerbread Crazy! (And a Gingerbread Freebie or Two!)

We made two fun Gingerbread crafts this year I wanted to share! Because they are super cute and have a little bit of spin that I have not seen before!

First is these cute Gingerbread Ornaments for our parents.

1. Mix 3/4 cup apple sauce (plus a dash more) and 1 cup cinnamon with about two tablespoons of glue. I would suggest buying 2 of the tall Cinnamon's and 2 of the large jars of apple sauce. That should get a classroom of about 30 very easily.

2. Knead the dough. It's important that there is NO creases or folds in the dough. You definitely have to work it.

3. Roll it out onto wax paper.

4. Then stamp with a gingerbread cookie cutter. Poke a hole with a toothpick for the string.

5. And lastly place to dry. They will have to dry for several days. Turn them over every half day or so. I would also suggest prewriting your students names on the wax paper so you know whose is whose!

6. Decorate with students' faces, hot glue works best. Ribbon hot glued through the ornament's hole, a sequence, and anything you want to add! Make adorable holiday gifts that will smell delicious for years!

We will wrap them by putting them in brown paper bags with just regular old paper towels to keep them protected. We will write on the backs of old Christmas cards I collected from last year, staple them together and they are ready to go! (The trick is to ask for them now so no one throws them away before they return from break... and save them for next year! The kids also love using these cards in the writing lab!)

Next is the gingerbread men we made for a Gingerbread Man Exchange. We made just regular old gingerbread men... cut out clothes and other trinkets for them. I let them cut patterned paper to do this part. I even set out tracers of close so the kids could put pants etc on them. The fun part was when the students put the glue on, I let them sprinkle cinnamon on the glue directly so they smell AMAZING! I know the kids who get them are going to love them! This was the best picture I took without a student in it.

Essentially how they were made use I gave the students this copy AND a brown piece of paper stapled together. I showed them how to cut both pieces so they got the brown paper with no image on it (but you very easily could just copy it onto brown paper and tell them to use the back to make theirs.) then I gave them a half sheet of pattern paper to cut as they wanted, buttons, and small pinch of cinnamon in a Dixie cup, and of course wiggle eyes! I basically let them get creative... some came with tie's and others had watches on, and others wore dresses. This kids really had a ball! (Sorry I could not post more creative pictures, I took pictures with their gingerbread men for our scrapbooks not thinking.) Also, don't forget you can get your Free Academic Gingerbread Houses Activity! Have students build graphs then use those graphs to build their milk carton gingerbread houses! It's a great academic twist to that fun project many of us have had taken away! Click the image below to grab it if you have not done so yet.

And I also have two supplemental products as well... Gingerbread Math Centers - students spin a spinner (or they can roll a dice or pick cards from a bag) to determine how many candy's to put on a gingerbread house. It's very similar to the project, just in a game/center they can play for the next few weeks! And also a Gingerbread Man Colors and Positional Word Practice Book. This kids love this as they manipulate the gingerbread many "inside the red hot oven" or "next to the blue river" or "below the blue bird." Click either image to check them out.

Kindergarten RIGOR (Ahhh) and a Sight Word Freebie!

Afternoon all! (Sigh)... I am so excited... my major paper is completed, not submitted but completed and so it is a HUGE weight off my shoulders! It's time for a grad school break I think! (I technically am not really going towards a specific program so in the long run it's probably better I not waste my money!)

Anyways! I did a post for the PreK and K Sharing blog about increasing rigor in Kindergarten! You should stop by and read it. It has practical ways to increase the pace and expectations in your classroom! And... the REAL definition of RIGOR... it's a must see!

Along in that post is a Freebie that I am SO excited about! Sight Word Motions! Seriously.. how could I have taught 10 years and not thought of this? Basically, I have specificed a specific motion for each word... why not, we do motions for everything else! Let me tell you... IT WORKS! My kids are saying these words on their own in centers and using them more appropriately in writing! And every time they do, they do the motion.. it makes me cry! So here is about 20 words as a freebie! I promise to add more as I go!

Lastly I wanted to share with you one of my FAVORITE winter projects! (And guess what, it meets the expectation of RIGOR!) We always make snowmen this time of year, but about 5 years ago when 'arts and crafts' was taken way I had to get creative. So, we make these super cute snowmen, the students write stories for thier bodies, and they assemble in about 20 minutes TOPS! (Which too if you write the directions on the board is reading and following directions.)

But the best part about these snowmen is their noses! I take break off the kids orange crayons and hot glue them on! They are abosuletly adorable!

So if you want to make these, here are my tips.

1. Staple the plates together before hand.

2. Create tracers (mittens, hats, and boots.) Show kids to trace them on the backs of pattern paper.

3. Let kids glue on all the peices except the story, that part is probably best you do.

4. Hot glue the noses yourself too for safety reasons (just to state the obvious.) Apply the glue, blow on it, then put the crayon. If you do this it won't melt and fall.
