Taking Care of Earth

Get your kids thinking about trash and being responsible with how they throw it away.

My annual Earth Day unit would not be complete without using the cute and creative Wartville Wizard story. The characters in the story literally get trash "stick ons" for being slobs, until the town wizard teaches them the valuable lesson of caring for our resources.

This Power over Trash writing activity ends my read aloud.

Students think of a consequence for littering and illustrate it...complete with a "stick on"
trash object.

Love it...a not very happy slob's consequence is for trash to stick to their feet so they can't move.

A little pestering to help slobs throw away trash might help here.

Yuck, a trash shower ought to teach everyone a lesson!

Gift Writing

My students completed our Gifts of Giving Writing this week.

Their ideas were cute and thoughtful.

"First of all, without moms in my life it would be an awful time because they make your day bright."

This student thought that, "... fire is a good thing because we need it to light up a candle

so we can celebrate birthdays."

I love celebrating Johnny Appleseed's birthday in the classroom! It gives me a good reason to bring all sorts of apple goodies into the classroom! During the week that John Chapman's birthday falls (September 26th) my students sample one different apple item each day. I usually do applesauce, cider, juice, pie, and different types of apples. We do graphs, read books, sing songs, all sorts of fun apple things! I put together some of my ideas and materials I use into a mini Johnny Appleseed/Apple unit. Here's what's included and a peek!

50th Day Fun!

The 50th day of school is rapidly approaching! (Okay...so I've still got like 20+ days to go but it's getting closer!) I've been thinking about how to jazz up what I do on the 50th day. I put together a packet of 50th day of school activities and posted it on Teachers Pay Teachers and Teacher's Notebook. Here are a couple of previews:
