Kindling "Maria"

In the summer of 2009, a series of blog posts known as "The Maria Chronicles" began running on this American History Now. (You can sample them via the complete list further down on the right side of this blog). Each of these discrete but interrelated pieces told a year in the life of Maria Bradstreet, a middle-aged divorcee and veteran teacher who began her life over by taking a job a a new school. The ensuing chronicles attempt to capture life in the classroom as it is rarely experienced in the vast professional literature on education. I've collected these pieces into a Kindle e-book that's now available for 99 cents at Amazon.com. My hope is that it will be of value for teachers, students, and all with an interest in life as it is often experienced in high school. Thanks to all who have had a look at them, and this blog, in the last three years.

In which we see Ms. Bradstreet try to handle dishonesty honestly

The Maria Chronicles, #50

Maria expects there to be a phone message waiting for her when she picks up the phone at her desk, and there is. "Mrs. Bradstreet," a voice intones, "this is Dr. Ronald Chiklis, father of Jacob Chiklis. Jake tells me you believe he cheated on an exam he took yesterday. I would like to hear your evidence for this assertion. I will be calling you again later today and/or following up with an email."

Hearing Chiklis's voice reminds Maria of the irritating conversation they had last fall, when he challenged the grade his son received on his essay, Maria suspects, because the Good Doctor himself had a large hand in its argument, if not its execution. Just one more reason she correctly felt dread when she saw Jake looking at Kenny's answers during an exam yesterday.

There's no doubt in Maria's mind now that Jake was cheating. At the time, it seemed surreal, and she didn't want to believe it, in part because the reality of a cheater was going to complicate her life. Maria is not a longtime teacher at the school, something that weakens her when dealing with the likes of Chiklis, and she has felt increasingly isolated ever since budgetary concerns have placed her job in jeopardy. She could take the matter to the principal, and she's aware that there is some kind of disciplinary committee. But she's really hoping that she can contain the controversy by having some kind of candid conversation with Jake, whom she's summoned to come see here this morning. And here he is.

"Good morning, Jake," she says as cheerfully as she can to a notably morose kid. "Like the jacket." It's a dark green windbreaker, seemingly new. "Pull up a chair," she says. He does an unloads a blue backpack from his shoulder.

Maria swivels in her desk chair to face him, dragging her cast-bound foot from the fall on a set of stairs four weeks earlier. "Jake, I want to you to tell me what happened yesterday."

Jake looks down and turns away. "I don't know what happened," he says dejectedly. "I was overwhelmed. I had a chem lab and an English essay and your test. And no time to study, because I had a baseball game Tuesday at Poly and didn't get home until late. And I saw all these questions I didn't know and I just panicked."

"You panicked," Maria repeats.

"Yeah. I just panicked. It's like I went into circuit overload, and I had to do something, anything, to just push my way through."

Maria nods. "I see." She pauses. "Did you not think we could talk about it?"

"What would there be to say?" he asks, irritated, looking at her briefly and then away. "That's not something you could fix. Talking only makes things worse. I made the mistake of telling my mom, who told my dad, who of course hit the roof."

"Yes, I got a message from him."

"Sorry. I told him not to do that."

"Not your fault." Maria's unsure where to go. Return to the test? Talk about workload? "Jake, I know that keeping the balls in the air can be hard sometimes. But you know, you're not half bad at it. I mean, you've been doing OK in my class."

"Yeah, well, tell my dad about it. He's even more upset with my grade in chemistry, which he insists on trying to teach me."

"I certainly can talk with your dad."

"Wouldn't do any good."

"Do you know what would?"

"No."

Maria purses her lips. "Jake, I don't think we can undo what you did yesterday. You would have failed the test yesterday anyway. But it doesn't have to be the last word in our work together."

Jake puts his hand on his forehead. "So what does that mean?"

"Well, it means that you've fallen into a hole. But it's a hole you can dig yourself out of."

"Great," he says in a voice of bitter dejection. "Just what I need. More work."

"Not necessarily. Jake, do you do read the assigned homework?"

"Sometimes I do," he answers candidly. "Like on the bus. But sometimes I just can't get to it. I just have too much other stuff --"

Maria cuts him off. "I get it. And that's OK. The thing is, Jake, you don't talk much in class. You could help yourself, and me, by speaking up more."

Jake pouts. "Yeah, I guess. But a lot of times I just agree with what other people are saying."

"What if I called on you first? If you know it was coming?"

"Yeah, but what if I don't know the answer?"

"Then you say 'I don't know.' No crime in that. But I'd probably ask you a question you did know -- or, at any rate, a question that's more of a request for an opinion. The important thing would be for me to feel that you were actually paying attention, and that I could ask you a question without you feeling that you were being ambushed. It wouldn't be a 'gotcha' thing. I think that would be good for the class to see, and it would be good in that it might make it easier for me to do this with some of the other kids."

"Yeah, I guess." He hesitates. "But what would this mean for my grade?"

"I don't know. Not trying to be coy here. I'm not going to saddle you with more work. But I am going to be watching to see how you engage. I think it's quite possible that come June what happened yesterday will make no difference at all."

Jake looks down and nods. And then he looks up. "OK, Ms. Bradstreet. I can do that."

"Great. We have a deal."

Jake stands up. "Look, I'm really sorry this happened. I didn't really want to do it. And I didn't want to do it to you. I don't really know why it happened."

"I don't either, Jake. And I know that you've still got stuff to deal with. But there's no reason why you and me can't finish the year on an even keel."

"Yeah, OK." He hoists his backpack on his shoulder. "I gotta get to class. Thanks a lot, Ms. Bradstreet."

"OK Jake. See you this afternoon."

Jake has been gone for all of thirty seconds when the phone rings. Maria knows who this is.

"Mrs. Bradstreet?"

"Yes. This is Ms. Bradstreet. You must be Dr. Chiklis."

"That's right. I want to talk with you about that exam yesterday."

"Well, I don't believe that will be necessary, Dr. Chiklis. Your son and I had a conversation and worked things out."

"Worked things out, you say? What did you work out?"

"Well, maybe you should have a conversation with him about that."

"Oh you can be sure I will. But right now I'd like to have a conversation with you."

"I don't think that's necessary, Doctor."

"But I think it is. You're the teacher of my son. If I ask you --"

"I suggest you listen to what your son has to say, Dr. Chiklis."

"Who do you think you are, Ms. Bradstreet? Do you think that as a teacher at this school you can simply refuse --"

"Since I'm likely soon be an ex-teacher at this school, I think I can, Dr. Chiklis. Please listen to your son. And have a good day." Maria hangs up.

Oh, that felt good, she thinks. May well be a mistake, but God that felt good.

In which see Ms. Bradstreet try to discipline her discipline

It's exam day in Maria's U.S. history survey. The test today is on World War II; while Maria has growing doubts about the necessity and value of fact-based exams, she still thinks that asking kids to master basic information about the war -- when Pearl Harbor happened; who won at Midway and why it mattered; how Lend-Lease worked -- seems like a legitimate and even necessary component of her course. But giving a test feels like cutting corners. For one thing, it's a quick and dirty assessment that can be graded in a fraction of the time it takes to grade a set of essays. For another, giving a test means she can sit in the front of the room and read while the kids work. Given Maria's uncertain future -- still no word about next year's budget, and thus no word about her future -- Maria's appetite for hard work is diminished. So she's taking refuge at her desk in Adam Haslett's new novel, Union Atlantic, about the long ago days of the 2000s. Her friend Janice bought it for her during Maria's recuperation from her broken foot. She figures she can get a few pages in waiting for the students to finish.

Finishing a chapter, Maria looks up to see Mia, who, to her surprise, is not looking down at her test. Instead, she's looking across the room at Jake. And when Maria turns her own gaze at Jake, what she sees is Jake gazing surreptitiously at Kenny's exam and writing down answers. Is this what she thinks it is? She really hopes not. But it sure seems that way -- and she suspects Mia isn't the only other one who thinks so. ***. Maria didn't think she had to distribute different versions of the exam in this school the way she did her last one. That was a mistake, and now she's going to have to act. But how?

Willie is now getting up, naturally the first to finish. But Vanessa, Derek, and Kenny are clearly almost done -- Kenny appears oblivious to whatever Jake has been doing. If Maria is going to do something, it's got to be now. With difficulty, no longer needing crutches but awkward in the boot she wears on her foot, she gets up and walks across the room to Jake. She can feel the eyes of the students on her as she semi-limps her way to him. "I'll take that," she says quietly.

"But I'm not done," Jake says, surprised.

"Doesn't matter," Maria says as evenly as she can. "I'll take this now, Jake, and we'll talk about it tomorrow."

Jake is too shocked to resist. Maria suspects her fragile balance prevents him from any dramatic moves or resistance to taking the exam from him. She pivots to save Kenny a trip to the front. "Here," she says, "you can give that to me." Kenny hesitates momentarily -- is she suggesting he cheated too? -- but decides, perhaps on the basis of Maria's reassuring smile, that it will be OK.

Jake looks stricken, unable to decide whether to say something or to go. Maria decides to ignore him. Other kids are getting up now, shooting looks at him as they do. Jake clearly wants to talk about this, but Maria decides it's neither the time nor place. She needs to think this through. "Go on, Jake. Come by my office tomorrow. Are you free before school?"

He nods.

"Very well then. I'll see you at 8:15." Mia approaches and Maria takes her exam. "Thank you."

Jake exhibits a combination of exasperation and defeat, but leaves the room. By now, the whispering has probably ricocheted to the other side of the school and back. Maria flips back to Jake's exam to take a look. He's changed a few answers on the multiple choice section; usually this is a mistake, but here they're changed from wrong to right. It's clear Jake has done very badly on the IDs that make up half the exam. Lots of unanswered questions -- nothing on Guadalcanal, Battle of the Bulge, Rosie the Riveter, Yalta. He's failed.

Congratulations, kid, she thinks to herself. Now both of us are going to have a lousy night's sleep trying to figure out what happens next.

Maria hates to let them go: It feels good to be back in the saddle six weeks after the fall that resulted in a serious concussion and a broken foot. It was such a relief to finally be back in the classroom, actually performing the heart of her craft. Maria has tried to maintain a sense of proportion about her work: family and friends have always been central to her life, and she's never had grand ambitions to be anything else but a good history teacher. But more than ever, her work matters. She remembers something her mother used to say. In your thirties, it's all about realizing your ambitions. In your forties, it's about realizing you're not going to realize them. In your fifties, it's about realizing you're going to lose what you have. Maria's fiftieth birthday is still a few weeks away. I've always been a bit precocious, she thinks grimly.

"Good to have you back, Ms. Bradstreet," Wilhelmina says as she exits.

"Great to be back, Willie."

"Yeah," José says. "It was really tough having the principal as your substitute history teacher. Ms. Bernstein is a serious hard-***."

" José!" Mia says. "You can't say that!"

"It's alright, Mia. I'm not offended, unless perhaps José is implying that I'm not working you all hard enough."

"Oh, no!" José. "You're just right, Ms. Bradstreet."

Maria smiles. "Just checking." Maria sees there are a few kids left, among them Derek, who, since he sits in the back, is always among the last to leave. "Derek, can I see you for a second?"

Derek says nothing, but comes up to Maria's desk, expressionless. She waits for the last of the students to leave and then sits down, reaching below her desk and bringing up a large package wrapped in brown paper that she asked Tommy, a member of the maintenance crew, to bring here this morning. "This is for you, Derek," she says, gesturing for him to take it.

"Me?" He looks a little pained, like he's been offered a huge piece of chocolate cake after a filling meal.

"It's an architectural drafting kit," Maria explains. "I talked to Artie Hinklebaum last week when I was home recovering, and he helped me order it through the art supply store he uses for the school. He said it's what you need if you want to take the next step in your work."

"Wow. I don't know what to say." He looks uncomfortable.

"It's just a little something to thank you for what you did."

"Wasn't much, really."

"Well, I beg to differ on that one, Derek. You may well have saved my life."

"Nah. You probably would have started breathing again on your own. Besides, there were a lot of other people around. Like that math sub, Mr. Casey. And the school nurse, what's her name, Mrs. Cano, was there in like ten seconds. She would have gotten you going again."

"Impossible to know, Derek. All I do know is that you were there and you gave me CPR, and now I'm here. That's enough to be thankful for."

Derek says nothing for a moment. "Mr. Casey lined up a summer job for me at an architectural firm downtown," he says. He half-smiles and points at the kit. "I guess you kinda knew that."

Maria smiles too, but he's still not looking at her. "Yeah, I kinda knew."

"Look, I appreciate this, Ms. Bradstreet, I really do," he says looking up her briefly and using her name for the first time she can ever recall. "But I just feel like this is all a bit much. I'm thinking I should turn down the job with Mr. Casey. I mean it was just something I did. Doesn't have to be a big thing. Shouldn't be a big thing. To be honest with you, it kinda makes me feel like a fake."

There's a long pause as Maria considers if she should say what the thinks. And then she does.

"It kinda makes you feel like a fake because you think everything is a fake." Derek looks up startled: another first. Funny: Maria feels like a boxer who's landed a direct hit.

"That's your problem Derek," she continues. "You're too *** yourself, and as a result you're too *** other people. Listen: this kit, this job, is nothing. As you probably guessed, Jack Casey is in fact a fairly powerful man. He hands out favors like lifesavers. Helps him feel good about himself, because he's got things that have him feeling bad about himself, just like everybody else. And I've got my own ulterior motives, even if there are no strings attached. I think of you as a classic underachiever, Derek. You show these flashes of brilliance that you hide because you're afraid showing them will cost you something, probably a sense of limits that somehow matter more to you than the possibilities. I've seen that movie many, many times. But I haven't seen many kids who have the talent of the kind you showed in that exhibit a couple months back, and frankly, I'm using the cover of a thank-you gift to make an investment in your future. But again, this is all beside the point. The only person who should really be thanking you, the only person who really matters here, is you."

Derek's expression changes from irritation to puzzlement. "I should be thanking myself?"

"Yup."

Derek shakes his head. "Can't figure that one."

"Then let me explain it to you. We've all got our doubts about ourselves, our fears about whether we're really good enough. They're always there, and they never fully go away. But you, Derek, get to live the rest of your life knowing that in a moment of crisis, you went and did what had to be done. You did it instinctively, without having to think about it. And because you did it before, you can have earned confidence that you'll do it again. That's a gift you can thank yourself for."

Maria sighs and looks away. "All right, that's enough preachy teacher talk," she says. "You're late for class. And I have some work to do. Now get this *** kit I've been lugging around outta here before I throw it out the window."

Derek looks at her, smiles and nods. He picks up the gift and heads for the door. "Thanks, Ms. Bradstreet," he says, his face obscured by the package.

"Remember, Derek, quiz on Friday." Maria grunts as she hoists herself up on her crutches.

In which we see Ms. Bradstreet entertain company -- and an offer

The Maria Chronicles, #47

"Here we go," Jack Casey says, placing a tray with two cups of tea and a pair of scones on the wicker table on Maria's third-floor porch. It's an unaccountably warm day, and they've decided to sit outside. The buds on the trees are barely visible, and so there's still a view of the Hudson from Maria's apartment. This setup has the added advantage of having them sit side by side, rather than face each other. Maria moves her crutches to make it easier for Jack to sit down.

This is his first visit since Maria fell down a flight of stairs at school a little over two weeks earlier. Jack was actually on the scene minutes after it happened, and has been a unseen powerful presence during her recuperation -- following her to the hospital, getting her car home, having food and flowers delivered. Maria has to admit it's been a shrewd approach, never asking what he can do, or giving her a chance to refuse. Well, maybe it's more accurate to say that Maria has declined to refuse. Her daughter Felicia thanked him on her behalf at the hospital, when she gave him the car keys. But Maria waited until yesterday to thank him by phone, which she realized she simply had to do. She also only thought it fair to invite him over as part of that expression of gratitude. He came bearing boxes of tea and scones that he picked up at the Tom's Bakery, around the corner.

It's turned out to be a pleasant visit. Jack has been alternately tactful, teasing, and curious. Maria realizes that in her desire to assert her independence, she's been so guarded with her children, as well as her best friend Janice, that she's been unable to unburden herself with a source of pain much greater than her ankle: the prospect of losing her job. Though she didn't intend to, she found herself explaining the situation to Jack. Maria recounted the visit of her department chair, Jen Abruzzi, five days earlier, and described the confluence of a teacher returning from leave, declining enrollments, and budget cuts that have imperiled Maria's future. Jack listened intently, nodding throughout. When she was done, he said, "I want to process this for a minute. Can I make us some tea?" And so he did, and so he's back.

"Well, Maria," he now says as he reaches for his mug, "you can't make them keep you. But you could certainly sue the school for a pretty penny."

"Sue them? Over what?"

"Your fall, of course. That's one dangerous staircase, even without that errant potato chip bag you slipped on."

"Jack! I would never!"

"Well, don't be so sure. For one thing, it's not entirely under your control. I can assure you that your health insurance company will be going after the school and that the school has a policy for just this kind of contingency. But you may also be able to net something for yourself. Do you have an attorney?"

"No I do not. And I won't be needing one, either."

"Can you really afford not to, Maria? Especially given this job situation?"

This is where Maria would like to say, "*** you, Jack." Instead she says, "I don't think I want to continue this line of discussion." She picks up her own tea, which allows her to cover her mouth.

Jack puts his own mug down and gets up, suddenly restless. He takes a few steps toward the balcony and turns around to face her.

"That's fair enough. I won't press that point. But I do have a proposal for you, Maria."

Oh no, Maria thinks.

"No, not that kind of proposal," he says, laughing as he reads her face. "Really, Maria. Give me a little credit here. No, what I'm talking about is strictly professional. You remember what I was telling you awhile back about my work with some folks down in the mayor's office?"

Maria nods. Jack is apparently deeply involved in the charter schools movement, trying to launch progressive schools using a Ted Sizer approach to challenge the Knowledge-Is-Power model.

"Well, after a couple years of planning, it looks like we're going to get our first charter going this fall. It'll be downtown. We're just getting going on the recruiting end, and I think you'd be a perfect addition. I'm thinking department chair."

"So you're working for the city after all?"

"No, no. Not for pay, anyway. But this is my life now. I've got some connections and the wherewithal to start things, and while I have no official paid role, I do think it's fair to say that I'm a part of this undertaking."

"Which is to say you're helping to underwrite it."

"Well, yes."

"That's great, Jack. But I don't think it would be right for me." Maria put her hand on her knees and looks down. This whole conversation is leaving a bad taste in her mouth.

"Look, Maria. I've long since figured out that you know my story -- the rough outlines of it anyway -- and I know you don't approve of it. That's fine. I'm not going to try to talk you out of your disapproval. But that's not because I feel I can't, but because I don't think there's anything I have to apologize for. Not to you, anyway."

Maria looks up. "Jack, I don't want --"

He holds his hand up to stop her. "Listen to me for a second. I'm not going to tell you that I'm proud of what I did in my years on Wall Street. I'm not. But I didn't do anything illegal, either, regardless of what you may have heard or read. My life since I left, my life since my wife died, has been about the degree to which you can really start over, to what degree you can put your past -- the part you don't like, anyway -- behind you. It's been a fascinating, ongoing experiment. And I'll be honest: I've regarded you as part of that experiment. Not in a clinical way, though it's required some discipline on my part. More as a process of discovery. About myself no less than you."

Maria is looking down again, not sure what to say, or how she feels.

"Anyway, the job is really something you should think about, because you wouldn't be working for me. I'd help you get it, of course, but that's it. I know it isn't ideal, and I wouldn't be bringing it up except for the fact that you're suddenly in this difficult situation with your current job. I wouldn't expect you to say yes right away, or at all. But don't say no now. Think about it and see how things play out at school. You're going back next week?"

"Yes. I probably could have gone back last week, but I wasn't ready to be limping around on crutches and living with the day-to-day ambiguity."

"I don't blame you." Jack looks at his watch. "Well, look, I better get going. Thanks for having me, Maria. I know this hasn't been easy for you. And I know I haven't been easy for you. Weirdly enough, that's kinda why I've kept at it."

"Well you've played your cards pretty well," she says, smiling.

"I am a pretty good card player," he says, picking up the tray and leaving her behind. "The real trick is what you do with your winnings. That's a game I'm still trying to figure out."

In which we see Ms. Bradstreet face a threat to her standing

The Maria Chronicles #X

Maria was able to send her son Evan home the day she got out of the hospital; her daughter Felicity insisted on staying two days longer. That Maria was able to go home was a function of the strong support she received from friends and colleagues. The chair of her department, Jen Abruzzi, came by every day. Her friend Janice told Felicity she'd be coming for an overnight visit the day after Felicity left. And as Maria herself pointed out, "I'm not an invalid, after all. I can get around fine in these crutches." An evident exaggeration. But Janice did succeed in getting Maria into her car, and the two made an excursion to see The Runaways, as both of them were Joan Jett fans in their youth.

As Maria well knew, however, the price she paid for this show of independence with her kids was the invisible presence of Jack Casey. It was Jack who had an extra walker delivered to the apartment before Maria ever got there. And it was Jack who sent a steady stream of gourmet food -- Chinese, Mexican, Greek -- every day. Jack apparently told Felicity that he was going to stay out of the way as long as Maria had the help she needed around the apartment, but that he stood ready to help if and when the need arose. "Quite a friend you have there," Evan observed, and wisely left it at that. Janice, naturally, clucked with approval and told Maria while she knew her friend would have a million reasons why Jack was impossible but that she was just going to have to get over herself. "*** you, Janice," she responded, and Janice kissed her on the forehead. Maria knows that at some point she's going to have to explain to Felicity, but she can't do that until she figures out just what there is to explain.

Today, Jen has come by again, this time with a pair of tuna sandwiches, a bag of chips, and a bottle of Diet Coke. Maria is aware that Jen as been a little stiff and uncomfortable on her visits, which she's attributed to feeling awkward with the family around. But the persistence of this discomfort today is hard to explain. Though Maria has been focused largely inward -- the lingering pain in her head and an overall sour mood have left her even more quiet than usual -- she decides to venture outward: "Is there something on your mind, Jen?"

Jen puts down her sandwich. "Maria, there's been something I've been wanting to tell you, but just never felt it was the right time."

"No time like the present, Jen."

"Well, I'm not sure about that. But I suppose at this point I should go ahead and tell you."

"Yes."

"Maria, do you know about Larry Roganoff?"

"Don't know him. I've heard his name."

"Yes. Well, Larry's been teaching at the school for many years. Decades. Two years ago, he took a leave of absence. It was widely believed then that it was a test run for retirement, and that he wouldn't be coming back. This year, he requested an extension on the leave, which Dani Bernstein reluctantly granted, but did because Larry's been sick and wanted a kind of security blanket. This in part is what allowed us to hire you. Last week Larry announced he was coming back. In and of itself, that wouldn't matter. But enrollments are unexpectedly down and after a lot of contention over the budget, the Board has ordered school-wide cuts. Individually, those things wouldn't matter, either. But taken together . . . . "

"Taken together means I'm out of a job."

"Not necessarily. Dani's in your corner, Maria, and, as you know, Dani is a pit bull. "'We're going to work this out,' she told me. I don't know whether that means a fight with the Board or a fight with Larry or a fight I don't know about in trying to hold your line. But from where I sit, as a department chair facing an uncertain situation, I felt some obligation to tell you what I see. I have this idea I owe that to you, even though it feels like kicking you when you're down."

"You're right, Jen. I do want to know. And yes, I do feel kicked." This is where Maria feels like she should be saying, "I know it's not your fault." And it probably isn't Jen's fault. But nothing she's been told at any point in the last year spelled out such contingencies. She's understood that her future wasn't guaranteed. But Maria always understood this in terms of her keeping up her end. Which she has. Now it looks like it's time to go back to Carney Sandoe and re-enter the job market. How could she have been so stupid? A middle-aged woman in this economy? She was a fool to think she could leave her old life behind.

Jen punctures the silence: "I should get going."

"I'm sorry, Jen. I'm just feeling a little out of sorts."

"I understand," Jen says as she stands up. "Well no -- I won't say I understand. But I can respect how you're feeling and thinking. I want you to know I'm going to do everything I can, Maria. We all want you here. Even if I can't save your job entirely, I think we can piece something together."

"Thanks for coming by, Jen. I do appreciate that."

Jen finishes buttoning her jacket, and purses her lips. "I'll be in touch, Maria."

Maria pushes the tuna fish sandwich in front of her off to her right. And then she puts her head in her hands and begins to cry.

In which we see Ms. Bradstreet come to her senses

The Maria Chronicles, # 45

The first thing Maria is aware of when she opens her eyes is the searing pain in her head. The second thing, which almost leads her to forget the first, is her daughter Felicity sitting at the foot of the bed, tearfully smiling at her. The third is the medical apparatus beside her, part of the larger unfamiliar bedroom setup in which she finds herself.

"Oh Mama," she says, rising and walking over to embrace her, "I'm so glad you're awake."

"Felicity," Maria croaks. "What are you doing here?"

"You're in the hospital, Mama. You fell down a flight of stairs yesterday."

"Fell down?"

"Yes. You slipped on a potato chip bag. You banged the base of your head on one of the stairs, and broke your foot. It's a miracle you weren't more badly hurt. You had a concussion, but according to the CAT scan it wasn't too bad. You remember any of this?"

"No.' Maria suddenly realizes that her leg is in a cast. It hurts, but not a lot. Is that because of painkillers? If so, why does her head hurt so much? And oh, she's terribly thirsty. Maria pours a cup of water from the tray overhanging the bed and puts it to Maria's lips. "Slowly," she says. Maria laps the water gratefully.

"You're also lucky in that people took very good care of you. You actually stopped breathing for about thirty seconds. Your student Derek Clark, who was the first to get to you, actually administered CPR. He apparently joked that he never thought a *** health class would ever do him any good." Felicity smiles. "Sounds like a boy after your own heart."

Barack Obama. Maria suddenly remembers somebody, must have been a doctor, asking her who the president of the United States was. How many fingers.

"And Jack Casey. He's the one who sent all the flowers." Maria sees dozens of roses on the window sill to her right. "He followed the ambulance here. He apparently went through your purse for information. He was the one who called me. And Evan. He stayed with you until I arrived. I just sent him out to get some breakfast."

Maria tries to say, "I'm sorry," but can't get the words out. Felicity puts her index finger on her lip to shush her.

"Evan is here, Mama. He arrived late last night. He went to get me a cup of coffee. I think he'll be back any minute."

Felicity strokes her mother's face, which is bruised. "You gave us quite a scare, Mama. But the doctor says you're going to be all right. They kept you for observation, but I think you'll be headed home soon. But that ankle is going to take a while to heal."

"That's exactly right," a young woman in a lab coat says, entering the room. "Glad to see you awake, Ms. Bradstreet. My name is Emily Battista. You took quite a fall there, Ms. Bradstreet. But I think you're going to be fine. But let me check a few of your vital signs and we'll talk about where we go from here."

And they do. But Maria drifts off, exhausted less by the poking and prodding than trying to digest what's happened. Just when it seemed her new life was getting underway, she's crashed.

"I guess I know what I'll be doing for Spring Break," she says out loud, as the doctor takes her vital signs.

The doctor stops what she's doing and gazes at Maria intently, apparently deciding she likes what she hears. "That's the spirit!" she replies misreading her.

That's what feels broken, Maria thinks. My spirit.

In which we see Ms. Bradstreet experience an unexpected twist

It is the Thursday before Spring Break, and Maria has been having a notably pleasant day. She likes Thursdays because she doesn't have any class first period, and if she arrives early, as she has today, it give her a nice chunk of time to accomplish something discrete. This morning, that means some lesson planning for after the break at the school library. As part of a week's worth of classes on the 1920s, Maria is leafing through a fabulous collection of bound periodicals that somehow remain in the library's collection even after this age digitization (and after an age of microfilm). She wants to find an advertisement or two that can be the basis of a discussion.

She's leafing through a 1923 copy of the Saturday Evening Post when she finds something priceless. "Just what is it to be a good wife in the modern age?" asks the headline for an advertisement for a laundry service. "Deep down in your heart -- deep in the heart of every woman -- is that eager, wistful wish to be a good wife -- a partner in your husband's plans, his cheery companion in leisure hours. You realize that in this advanced age your husband needs a mate as modern-minded as himself." Maria loves the Janus-faced quality of the ad; she knows the kids will laugh at the language, and yet its incipient vision of companionate marriage is one they will recognize and affirm (the woman in the ad is also wearing flapperish clothes). Should be good for a half-hour conversation easy. She photocopies the ad and then scans it onto her course website.

By now there's an assembly going on in the auditorium. Maria decides to skip it, the luxury of not having an advisory in which she has to keep tabs on a group of kids (this will presumably change next year). She goes to the faculty lounge and gets a cup of coffee. While she's there, she flips through a copy of Education Week.

Next, it's on to a department meeting. The agenda today is staffing for the fall. Actually, there's not a whole lot to talk about: for the first time in years, there is no anticipated turnover in the History Department. Maria is slated to have the same slate of classes next year as she did this year, which is fine with her. Her chair, Jen Abruzzi, does point out that final decisions are pending approval of next year's budget. But she assures Maria that she has no reason to think it will not go through. Maria thinks maybe she should be worried, but somehow can't quite work up the anxiety right now. She finds herself struck by this sense of equilibrium.

Since the meeting ended early, Maria has time to go to the women's room. She goes back to her desk, checks her email, and pulls out her cell phone to make an appointment to get her hair dyed and cut. Then it's off to her "Great Debates" class, where the discussion today will be about Ronald Reagan's role in ending the Cold War. The assigned reading is a chapter in the book Imperfect Presidents by Jim Cullen. It's not a great book, but the chapter is just the right size for a night's reading and a class discussion. Her son Evan gave it to her for Christmas a couple years ago; she photocopied the chapter rather than scanning it, fearing that if she didn't students wouldn't print or read it.

Then it's on to lunch. Maria joins Jen and Penny Perez, who are eating with Edie Wilson, who regales them with tales of the idiots she encountered on her last spring vacation in the Bahamas. This year she's going to St. Barts. Penny will be visiting family in Puerto Rico; Jen will be going skiing with her new boyfriend in Vail. Maria feels a pang of envy at all these plans. She'll be home, doing spring cleaning, grading, and, she hopes, hosting her friend Janice from Boston.

After lunch it's time to teach her survey class. On the way she encounters her student Derek Clark, who's coming up the main corridor staircase she's about to go down. She's about to say something to him when he smiles at her, and Maria is taken aback: this is the first time she's ever seen him give an unironic smile. "I'll be right there," he says. "I just have to drop off something at my locker."

Maria, smiling back, starts to say "That's fine." But her left foot covers a stray empty bag of potato chips the ninth grade history classes have been collecting for a science project. The last thing she remembers is a sudden pain in her ankle as she tumbles down the stairs.

In which we see Ms. Bradstreet feel right at home (at the supermarket)

The Maria Chronicles, #43

Maria is surprised when, after an early Sunday dinner, she leaves her apartment to go food shopping and finds there's still light outside: Spring is on the horizon. It's enough to take the edge off the drudgery of the task, though the accumulated salt on the side of her Prius reminds her both that winter is not over and that what New Englanders call "mud season" is still to come. Dusk is still lingering when she parks in the lot of the Food Emporium and grabs a cart near the entrance of the supermarket.

It's been at least ten days since she's been here. Maria remembers when she went at least once a week, groaning with the weight of a mini-van's weight worth of groceries (somehow Mark and the kids never seemed to be around to help her put stuff away). Now food shopping is like laundry: a relatively rare, relatively fast event. There you go: an advantage to being old and single. She might even get away with using the express lane on the way out, though she's taken to using the self-checkout machines that were installed recently. Funny how technology makes steady incursions into the interstices of everyday life, and yet some tasks, like buying napkins, never seem to change. Then again, some of her colleagues in the city order their groceries online and have them delivered. So maybe this little ritual will be gone soon, too. She won't miss it.

Maria has made her way to the meat section, and is looking at 90% lean ground beef, when she hears a voice behind her: "Ms. Bradstreet!"

Maria turns around: it's Willie. Maria's stomach sinks. Bad enough to have her private life invaded this way. Even worse to consider that she's wearing faded jeans and an old Harvard sweatshirt. Maria feels like her dignity has been punctured.

But Willie doesn't seem to notice. "Hi!"

"Well hello, Willie," Maria says, trying to sound cheerful. "What brings you here?"

"Well, I'm helping my dad with the weekly food shopping. I always wondered if I would ever see you around town."

"Really? Where do you live, Willie?"

"Over on Hillside," she answers. "Only about a mile away from you."

Maria is as surprised that Willie lives nearby as she is that Willie knows where she lives. If it was anybody else, she'd find this creepy. Instead, it's just a bit deflating. Willie is beaming, but Maria sees that her student is just now realizing that she doesn't quite know what to say or ask. God bless her: She as the decency to realize that questions will not be welcome. And then Maria sees a light bulb go off. Willie leans back and peers down a row just beyond Maria's view. "Dad! I want you to meet Ms. Bradstreet."

Ugh. But Maria can't flee. She's just going to have to see this one through. She steals a look at her watch: 6:13. It's surely dark now.

A surprisingly short man -- Willie is almost as tall as he is -- emerges from the aisle wearing black jeans, a navy hoodie, and moccasins that look like they're actually slippers. Though his reddish hair is thinning, Maria sees that he's younger than she is. This is something she still hasn't made her peace with. Even though her children have finished college, the parents of her students, who typically had their kids later than she did, have been more or less her age for a long time now. But now a gap has begun to widen. One more thing to get depressed about.

"Dad, I want you to meet Ms. Bradstreet."

He extends his hand, and the warmth of his smile gives Maria a shock of recognition: This is where Willie gets it. "Hello Ms. Bradstreet. Tommy Marzetti. Wilhelmina's dad. Real nice to meet ya."

"Pleasure to meet you. And a pleasure to work with your daughter."

"Willie's having the time of her life in your class. Always been a good student, always loved history, but this year has been something special. Many a good dinner table conversation, let me tell you!"

"Well she's been a real spark plug for our class discussions."

"Yeah, well, like I said, she loves history. Just like her old man." He winks at his daughter and resumes addressing Maria. "I was a history major in college. I've taken Willie to Saratoga, Gettysburg, places like that. Over spring break I'm driving her and my wife down to Colonial Williamsburg. She and I went there once before Willie was born and loved it. I want her to have the same experience."

Willie is beaming at her father, and Maria is struck by the depth of their mutual affection. Though very bright, Willie has always struck Maria as socially immature. Most kids would be awkward, if not alienated, in this kind of situation, yet she seems utterly unselfconscious. Maria is moved, in part because she suspects that this man has managed to do something very well to be the recipient of such unstinting love.

He appears to sense Maria's distraction. "Well look, we don't want to hold you up. But I'm very glad to have the chance to thank you for being such a special person. Willie really sees you as a role model. Wouldn't surprise me if she turned out to be a history teacher herself."

"God forbid," Maria says smiling. "Surely she can do better than that."

"Oh I dunno," he says, taking her seriously. "What could be better? Sure beats managing the service department at a Ford dealership. Anyway, have a great evening."

"Bye bye Ms. Bradstreet! See you tomorrow!"

The encounter lifts Maria's spirits, which remained buoyed for the rest of her trip down the supermarket aisles. Surprisingly for a Sunday night, she finds an open self-serve checkout, and is loading her groceries into the back of her car at 6:38 when she hears her cell phone ring inside her purse. Must be Felicia, she thinks. Her daughter always calls on Sunday night.

But it's not. Maria sees that it's the head of the history department. "Hi Jen," she says.

"Hey Maria. I'm having a glass of wine with Karl and Penny at The Black Rose, just around the corner from the school. We were wondering if you could join us. We were thinking about ordering a pot of fondue."

Maria is surprised by the offer. She and Jen have socialized, but she hasn't really gone out with any other faculty members. Pleased to be asked, she's also mindful that it's Sunday night and she now has a car full of groceries.

Jen senses her hesitation. "C'mon, Maria. Don't tell me you're not prepared for class tomorrow. "

Maria smiles. "I'll be there in twenty minutes," she says.

"That's my girl. We're in the back. I'll order you a Pinot Grigio."

Who woulda thunk it, Maria reflects, as she cues up the new Lyle Lovett CD as she waits at a traffic light. It's taken eight months, but for the first time she can imagine this as place as home.

In which we see Ms. Bradstreet confronted with honor among thieves

It's 7:11 a.m. when Maria steals into the copying room to run off two large sets of primary source documents, one on unionization efforts at the turn of the century and the other on the Progressive movement, for her survey class. This feels like an illicit activity. The school has been making a big push for scanning documents onto course websites, in part to save paper and in part to reduce the traffic in the copy room, which tends to back up during the day, especially when one of the two copiers breaks down, which seems to be daily. But Maria has had bad luck with scanning. She did a ton of work trying to get her whole curriculum done at the end of last summer. But when the files she made were .tifs instead of jpegs (whatever that means) she threw her hands in the air and gave up, resuming her regular copying. Like a lot of history teachers, she uses a lot of documents, and she's a publisher's nightmare in that she interprets the doctrine of fair use as it applies to copyright liberally. She nevertheless feels a sense of guilt as she arrives in the empty room, turns on the copier, and waits for its interminable warm-up. She'd like to get all this done by 7:30, a full hour before classes, which is when she figures the early birds among the faculty will arrive in force.

The second stapled set of unionization docs has just come out of the copier when she hears a voice behind her: "Caught ya." Maria jumps in terror and turns around. It's Cuff Man, Jack Casey. ***.

"Jack, you scared me," Maria says, hand on her chest, feeling warring impulses between relief and irritation.

"Sorry about that," he replies evenly. "I see we get the worm today." He reaches into the briefcase he now puts on the table in the middle of the room and pulls out a sheaf of papers that look like math worksheets. "Great minds think alike, huh?"

He turns around, his back now to Maria, and turns on the other copier. She would love it if he just stayed in that position, no further communication between them, but she knows that isn't likely. The silence is getting awkward and will only get more so. But what can she say that will not risk entangling her?

Maria rarely seen Jack since she accidentally bumped into him in a hallway in early January, only about a week after they'd gone on their sole formal date. At the time, she'd been convinced -- incorrectly, as it turned out -- that he'd slept with her boss and friend, Jen Abruzzi. There'd been a few times she's seen him in subsequent weeks, but surprisingly few, and they were occasions when she'd been able to change direction or pretend not to see him. Thankfully, he never insisted on greeting her. Now, though, she guesses her luck has finally run out.

"So how's it been going, Maria?" He's talking loudly, above the din of her machine, which will soon be supplemented with his own.

"Fine, I guess," she replies. "You know, routine."

He feeds papers into the sorter and presses the print button. "Well, that's good, I guess."

Now the noise gives Maria cover. But she's also feeling guilty -- first it was over using the copier, now it's Jack. Why is she being so cool toward him? Does she really need to be? All right, she thinks. He's not for me. But why am I so *** severe?

Her first set is done, and it's time to feed the Progressive docs. Jack's set is done, too, so there's a sudden silence. Maria pauses before the print button and says, "So I haven't seen you around much lately." Then she hits it.

"No," he says above the din. "Actually, I've been downtown these last few weeks. I have a few friends in the mayor's office who are working on charter schools."

"Sounds interesting." Maria considers this an exit strategy, and yet she is, despite herself, a bit intrigued.

Jack is now voluble despite the noise. "You know those KIP schools? Knowledge is Power?"

"Vaguely."

"Yeah, well, it's not a bad program. But very conservative. Lots of skill and drill. Unfortunately, a lot of people think of that as rigor. I myself think of it more like rigor mortis. Anyway, I'm working with a group of people who are trying to develop more progressive approaches. The Obama administration's 'Race to the Top' program is still very No Child Left Behind oriented, but we think we can develop some alternatives that might command some attention. Like that Ted Sizer stuff we'd discussed. You know Grant Wiggins? His stuff on authentic assessment?"

"I know a bit about it," Maria replies. "But it sounds like you're much more immersed than I am. Are you actually working for this city?"

Jack chuckles. "No, not formally. I don't really have the qualifications." (You can say that again, Maria thinks, having investigated Jack's record as a shady Wall Street speculator who probably belongs in jail.) "But I do have some managerial and administrative experience that can help. Which I'm eager to do."

"I guess that explains why you haven't been around as much lately."

"Well, yeah, that and the fact that the principal doesn't much like me and has told the chair of the math department as much." He smiles again. Does he know she knows his story now? There's something both roguish and self-effacing about him at the same time. "Doesn't really matter," he continues. "I've enjoyed working here, and really like the kids. But I think it's served its purpose and I probably won't be coming much longer anyway."

Maria is unexpectedly disappointed to hear this. It appears Jack's foray into substitute teaching was not so much a dilettantish exercise as it was part of a broader plan to launch an (apparently philanthropic) career in education reform. She can't quite decide what to make of this guy.

Jack turns back to the copier and pulls a stack of collated sets from the tray on the right end of it. "Well, that about does it for me," he says cheerfully. "The word is mum, Maria. I won't report you to the copier police."

"I suppose that's what you'd call honor among thieves," she says wryly.

"You got it," he replies, and the combination of his smile and the twinkle in his eye unnerves her. And then, as suddenly as he appeared, Jack Casey is gone.
