Um, no. At least not because of the wall decorations alone. Nevertheless, I love letter-themed decor like alphabets, quotes and other wordy wall art, and I think it can have a role in creating a print-rich home.

My seven year old son learned his letters at a very young age and he swears it was because he spent so much time looking at the alphabet hanging above his crib. Apparently he's forgotten the millions of books I read to him, and all the other "letter play" we did when he was young. (Not to mention, that his brain is just naturally wired for letter learning.) Anyway, for him at least, the alphabet letter decor was something he noticed and responded to at an early age, and so it probably did play a little part in his letter learning.

Here are some of my recent letter decor loves:

These wall cards from Finny and Zook

Lovely quotes from The Wheatfield

Screen Printed Wooden Alphabet Cards from Petit Flaneur

This print and these wall cards from Sea Urchin Studio

Custom Birth Print from Trendy Peas

Cute for older kids who "get" cursive

This print from Oh, Hello Dear

And for an awesome DIY project, read this tutorial from Destri Bufmack on Design Mom!

Once the art is on the wall, click here for ideas on how to use it to inspire some learning.

Do your kids notice the letters on the wall at your house?

Letter Love #6: Letter Decor

If you hang up some alphabet wall art in your child's nursery, will he become a genius baby reader? a place in our family spaces, we send the great big, important message to our kids that we value literacy.

Every day I come across clever and inspiring ways to incorporate reading and writing into the home. In fact, it's the reason I started this blog!

Here are a some of my favorite ideas...

Turn something into a writing surface, like this or this or even this.

Put books in every room and organize them like this or this or anyway that works for you, as long as your kids can find them.

Set up a writing area (or two), like this.

Make literacy games and activities easily accessible, all around the house. Two examples, here and here. Try hiding words in the Lego pile. -Or the rock pile. Possibilities are endless!

Let kids see you writing and reading. Reading recipes, writing family messages and lists, etc.

Label your stuff.

Leave letters out to play with.

Decorate with letters, then do something with the decorations.
