From the site: Youngzine is a one-of-a-kind Web site where children can learn about current news and events shaping their world — in a simple, engaging and interactive manner. Along with news stories written specifically with our young audience in mind, Youngzine strives to inform using fun trivia, compelling visuals and videos.

Youngzine is a really nice news magazine for kids. It encourages kids to express their views, submit articles, book reviews and more. All content is moderated by their editorial team before published.

Screenshot

Kids news and magazines always offer great topics for classroom discussions and Youngzine looks like a really nice one. I like that students can also comment on the stories they have read. You must register for the site but all content is free.

Print articles easily using Print What You Like to create a printer friendly version of the page that will help you save ink. I like Print What You Like and it has a bookmarklet tool that always comes in handy.

TweenTribune is a wonderful site for tweens that will get your students reading. This online news magazine features current stories that will catch your students’ attention and keep them engaged. Stories can be read online or printed out for every student. Teachers can create free accounts and students will be able to comment on stories. Comments are moderated by teachers. Did I mention that TweenTribune is FREE?

From the site: “Engage, inform, and educate your students with TweenTribune. The site let students interact with the news, while fulfilling requirements for language arts, computer skills, and other classes.”

Screenshot

More from the site: Once your class starts using TweenTribune, the site will automatically generate custom pages showing:

The stories your class has commented upon

Individual comments by each student, on his or her own page

All comments by your students, in one report that can be sorted by students’ names, comments, or dates

And don’t worry – you can moderate, edit, or delete your students’ comments before they’re published.

Then click – you’ve just printed individual reports for every student in your class. Click the Print reports link, and you will print out individual reports for each of your students, showing the comments he or she has made on various stories. And each report contains space for you to critique the writing, analysis, or critical thinking reflected in your students’ comments.

***I can’t believe they do all of this and it’s free. TweenTribune is a great site that will encourage students to read and participate in a conversation of what they have read. Having their comments added to the site as well as being able to share them with classmates is an added bonus.

***You may also want to check out TeenTribune for older students. It is equally as nice as it’s counterpart.

SpineOut is a new Australian online magazine that looks good for young teens, maybe older tweens. It offers students lots of ways to express themselves and possibly be published on the site. The site has lots of neat things to interest their target audience and the look of the site is spot on.

From the site: It’s a special place for Young Adults (YA’s) to express their ideas and thoughts and to share their creativity in words, art, film or music.”

The magazine is free and can also be printed out if you wish.

This find via Bright Ideas.

News for Kids is a LiveBinder that I put together featuring all...

News for Kids is a LiveBinder that I put together featuring all types of free online “New Magazines” for kids.

Here is just a sample of what I have compiled.

Time for Kids

Kind News

Dodo News

This Week in Rap

Scholastic News

PBS News Hour Extra

CBBC News

Sports Illustrated for Kids.

…and much more.

I have compiled 27 (more added when I find them) resources that you can use with your students. These sites are good for individuals as well as finding ideas for group discussions, projects, current events, unusual current events, world news, etc. I hope you can use this resource.
