Students select words from a word bank. Each word has a number on it to represent the number of syllables of that word. Students arrange their poem on 3 lines provided. Neat way to practice Haiku writing and creating.

Offline Classroom Application: This could also be done using word cards that students create and have added the number of syllables to. Then students could mix them up and create different Haikus using their own words.

I love Where the Sidewalk Ends, A Light in the Attic and get teary-eyed with every reading of The Giving Tree.

Tonight I want to share with you Shel Silverstein’s Official Site. If you use any of his books in your classroom you may want to include his site in your lesson.

There are games, printables, lessons and activities that would be great to add to your plan. I really like the interactive “Practice being a Poet” where students must complete one of his poems, choosing words from a list of his words.

April is National Poetry Month and I plan to include a lesson centered around Shel’s poetry and art.
