We used them as counters, in math problems, for fun, whatever we thought we could, but never really to the best of their abilities. So last week while looking through educational supplies online I stumbled across light boxes. These boxes were used paired with transparencies for fun exploration. Thinking about how I could make one a light bulb went on and here it is:

Basically I put a strand of low voltage Christmas lights in a box and turned it upside down. It worked great! It is really basic but fun and safe, and it gets the job done. And everyone has fun with it too!

We use it for:

It includes a wealth of intriguing math-based puzzles wrapped into an exciting narrative game in which students work to find their lost pet - and save the world from monsters! Linked to both national and state mathematics standards, the game gives students a chance to actually think like mathematicians.”

There is a wealth of information for teachers as well as resources you will need to use the game in your classroom.
Numeracy, phonics, science, history, geography, are some of the other subjects covered. The Interactives open up in a new window, full screen, bright and colorful, with no ads. This site is fabulous and of course, now it’s free. Check it out.

It features learning experiences (games/interactives) for grades preK-12, mostly math, science, and social studies related. They have compiled many unique interactives that will engage students into the learning process.

Example of interactives: disecting a virtual fish (Seafood Surgery), Learning to Read Maps, and Broken Calculator

PreK-2 also has many audio books for students to read and listen to.

Primary Games Arena claims to be the “largest collection of curriculum games in the universe”. After visiting their site I think it might be true. They have a tremendous collection of educational games, covering more than 14 subject areas, which students can access easily to reinforce skills and lessons learned.

The games on Primary Games Arena come from many of the best known educational game sites such as Arcademic Skill Builders, Math Playground, and Oswego City School District. They have done a great job in sorting the games into categories so you can easily pick out the games you want students to use. There is also a screenshot and rating for each game.

If you use online educational games in your classroom then Primary Games Arena is going to be a pleasant surprise for you.

Below are screenshots of the subjects they cover and how the games are categorized.

Just Kids Games is one of the sites I have added to this LiveBinder. It is a site with educational games that focus on math, science, reading and the environment. They are presented in a free and safe environment for kids to enjoy. The games are bright and colorful, sure to attract your student’s attention. There is a nice array of games to choose from. Subject covered and grade level appear below each game.

What’s also great about this is that you and your students can access the classrooms of other teachers. Wow! Classes are arranged according to grade and the titles will help you find what you are looking for. The subject range for the games is quite extensive.

It’s so nice to find a wonderful site like Play Games for Kids, that offers so much and it’s free. Kids can even access their teachers games at home, especially helpful when that spelling test is coming up.

I have always liked Play Kids Games but this has made them even better.

“Play Kids Games provides free online kids games that are both fun and educational. Aimed at ages pre-K through middle school, Play Kids Games offers kids a safe environment to discover their abilities and learn new skills with interactive and fun computer games. Our games build skills in math, logic, memory, vocabulary, alphabet, spelling, geography, computer skills, color identification, shape identification and other various problem solving.”
