Geometry Concentration and a Freebie

I am seriously enjoying my Spring Break this week and finally got motivated today to post some newbies.

We worked on geometry a few weeks back and I made a couple of games to help students practice identifying geometric figures and shapes.

The first game is called Geometry Concentration and it was designed to help students practice identifying kinds of lines, pairs of lines, angles, and parts of a circle. It is available for $2.00 in my TPT shop!

Substitute Writing Idea and a Math Game

So, we have to turn in three days of sub plans each year and I have been working on gathering my lessons for my this because it's due Friday! I recalled a blog post I saw earlier this year about where your missing teacher has gone and I was inspired to make my own to cater to upper grades too!

I snagged the idea from Cara Carroll at "First Grade Parade." Click HERE to see her adorable post about her writing activity! I asked if she would mind if I did my own little spin on it and of course she said, yes! But, she said she saw the idea somewhere on Pinterest! If this was your original idea, please let me know and I will add you to this post!

Anyway, here is my version with both primary and upper grades writing pages! In the first one, students write a few sentences about why they think their teacher is out and draw a picture to go with it!

Then, I came up with this one all on my own! I was creating the first one and I was inspired to turn it into a newspaper article! Anytime the students can pretend to be someone else, I think it really gets them thinking and their ideas flowing!

Finding the Range and Measuring

I have new activities to share today! The first one is my freebie! This activity is to help students practice measuring different objects to the nearest half inch. I gave my students the exact rulers they will use on the PASS test (our lovely state standardized test) to practice measuring with. Just click the image below to download.

I am just so proud of this next activity! I came up with a clever name and it fit with one of my adorable clip art sets! We practiced and played this today and they were loving it!

I have been doing math center review activities this week to help students practice various math skills in preparation for PASS and tomorrow we are working on fractions of a set! I made this fun little space themed activity to use and it's for sale in my TN shop!

Even and Odd Outcome Zing

We took our Math benchmark test this week and it turns out, my students are really struggling in math this year. I am sure my 7 week absence played a role as well, but I can't help but thinking that I didn't do a good job. =(

My plan of action was to take all of the standards students missed 6 or more questions on and focus on those for the next 10 days until the PASS test. Monday, we are working on odd and even outcomes so I made up a fun little "Zing" game for students to practice.

I am on my way to Jacksonville, FL right now for my boyfriend's, brother's wedding. I'm able to get internet in the car thank goodness! It has definitely help pass the time! We got a wireless hub with three free months when we bought our new Dell XPS Ultrabook. I am loving it!

Data and Graphing Mini Unit

This weekend has flown by and I am not quite ready for school tomorrow! I have spent WAAAAY too much time blog stalking and piddling around on the web today...

On a teachery note, I have finally finished working on that Data and Graphing unit that I told you about, oh like two weeks ago. I love teaching data! It's so much fun and the kids like being able to go around and survey each other! One of my favorite things we did though was a fun activity to teach line plots. I had a piece of chart paper set up before we started titled "Paper Ball Baskets." The students each got a turn trying to shoot a paper ball into our recycling bin (you could anything really, but the bin is large enough to really give everything a good chance.) The students shoot until they miss. I plot on a chart the number of times they shot without a miss. When the whole class is finished, we discussed how many shots most people made in a row and so forth! It was my BTF's (Best Teacher Friend - remember, I bragged about her yesterday) idea and we had so much fun!

Multiplication Wheels

So, I have been inspired by fellow teachers to create something useful today and this is what I came up with! We are working on multiplication and I saw this idea last year, but never made any to actually use in the classroom. So, here you go!

A little bit of this, a little bit of that...

We have been learning so much this last month that I just wanted to share a few things from our classroom's neck of the woods.

We just recently finished up a unit on South Carolina Geography and Regions. One of the activities we did was a circle graphic organizer to help us learn about types of communities. This picture is from the first slide of the flipchart I made.

If you don't have Activ Inspire Promethean or SMARTboard software on your computer, it will not open.) I realize that not everyone learns about South Carolina, but you can just change it to suit your own needs.

In writing, we have been doing descriptive writing. I was visiting Abby's blog, the Inspired Apple some time ago and came across her Pop Rockin' Descriptive Writing mini unit and I thought it would be a fun thing to do in honor of Halloween. I purchased the unit, which you can buy, here.

Here are some pictures of what we have done so far! First, we talked about what adjectives were and I gave students the pop rocks and adjectives sheet. They tasted the pop rocks and wrote down adjectives to describe the experience.

This is definitely my favorite picture. Just imagine you him laughing hysterically...This little guy was hilarious!

Clearly these little cuties have never had pop rocks before! I just love their faces!

Then we made this class chart to close the lesson.

The next day, we learned what a simile was and we made this anchor chart.

The students then went back to their seats and completed this simile sheet.

In Math, we have been doing subtraction with regrouping. Today, we played this spinner game. I had my students work with a partner, but this would also be a good individual activity. Just have the student use a paper clip and pencil to use the spinner. First, they spin a top number, then a bottom number and just subtract or add.

Properties of Addition Activity

We worked on properties of addition last week. We talked about the three properties and to help them remember, I taught the kids that the Commutative property could also be called the flip flop rule because the numbers just flip around and you still get the same sum.

To help them remember Associative, we talked about the word "associate" and how it can mean partner or buddy. We called this rule the buddy rule because the parentheses make the numbers have a partner or buddy.

For the Identity rule, we called it the Me rule because these numbers don't like change! They like being themselves. So, when you add zero to a number, this is exactly what happens. The number doesn't change, it stays the same!

To to help my students practice, I made this little game/activity. All that is required is a set of three dice per child and copies of this sheet!

I am currently working on our next science unit on Animal and Plant Adaptations. Stay tuned in the coming weeks for the finished product!

Place Value Review

Most districts begin every math unit with place value. I was visiting Pitner's Potpourri recently and came across this great idea for reviewing Place Value that she called a Place Value Marathon. See her post here.

I took this idea and created one to meet my classroom needs. My marathon works on place value through the hundred thousands, so this is great for the upper elementary and can be adapted for lower elementary.
