This morning at eating time, my student Christian came to me and showed me his sandwiches. He showed me what was written on them. I found them so cute! His mom was reminding him to be positive, behave, smile, and listen to instructions. I think that is such a great idea as a reminder to show your child that you are following up with him, you care and you are involved in what he does during class. Way to go Mommy! I loved it

Sweetness and Light

The Wight's Sago Dress was a hit today at school. I don't think I've ever gotten that many compliments from co-workers before. I guess the dress did a great job covering up the fact that I only got four hours of sleep last night. I've been so nervous about sleeping through my alarm clock (which has happened before, creating some rather hilarious scenarios) that I've been waking myself up every couple of hours. I also went for an early morning walk with a friend at 5:45, so that probably had something to do with my exhaustion too. It's hard trying to fit in workout time, but I'm trying! I'm planning to go to bed before ten tonight and use my cell phone as a second alarm, so hopefully I'll be well rested for tomorrow.

I have to say that I've been pleasantly surprised at all of the positive energy at work lately. It's been really nice chatting with everyone and catching up. I guess even though I was stressed out like crazy about going back to work, I can't complain about such a supportive environment. Good times.

I'm still trying to figure out if I can keep up with this daily blog thing, but I guess I'll go as far as I can with it. Or at least until the first wave of papers come in. I'm collecting sixty essays next Friday, but I've been pretty good so far with grading homework assignments and short writing pieces. I'm realizing that procrastinating is totally out of the question now. With a super tight schedule with grading, planning lessons, taking DN to various lessons and practice sessions, picking up the twins, and daily living, there just isn't time to waste. I finished rereading Antigone today at my favorite restaurant over a cup of yuzu lemonade, so I'm trying to indulge in small pleasures where I can. The Parisian lifestyle in a suburban mom's world.

LOOKING FOR DEDICATED & ACTIVE PARENTS!

If you’re like most people, you were so scared of messing up that you were nervous and overcautious. Do you ever see the “Student Driver” cars where they put their turn signal on two blocks before turning and check the mirror seven times before changing lanes?

I really do. And I love that I am right around the corner from my parents' house. We could walk there if we really wanted to.

What I don't love is that I am the closest child. My sister is about fifteen minutes away, so we all get together for Shabbat dinner and all other holidays, and my brother is in Conneticut (we're outside Philly), so I am the go to if there are any big problems. Which, as the middle child, I am fine with - I'm the peacemaker and the caretaker.

Unfortunately my mom has lots of health problems. She has a really bad back (degenerative disk disease) that is made worse by her weight. She has asthma and, even though she finally gave up smoking (YES!), still is very susceptible to respiratory infections. And she gets really bad vertigo every once in awhile, bad enough that she cannot move for fear of falling.

I just got a call from my mom, a "just-in-case call." She had spent a lot of the morning very short of breath, dizzy, experiencing heart palpitations, and raising her arms made it worse. She feels better now (though still short of breath some). I mentioned that maybe the fact that she has had a cold now for a few days is affecting her breathing and that she should call the doctor.

"Don't worry," she reassured me, "I have an appointment for Monday."

Great.

So when I get the next phone call where she can only gasp out my name on the phone and I call 911 and we take her to the ER, I'll be sure to explain to all the doctors there that it's all okay: she is going to see her doctor on Monday.

TinyEYE: My Mom

My mom is a never ending song in my heart of comfort, happiness, and being. I may sometimes forget the words but I always remember the tune. ~Graycie Harmon
Hi everyone - hope all is well with you.

I am writing today because I am proud of my mom. Last night she was elected to her town council. To me, this is just another goal my mother has achieved. My entire life, I have watched her make a plan then make it happen. If she encountered a challenge along the way, she would change her direction - but not her destination. Growing up, each time I left my mom she would call out, “have fun, be good, be careful!” Besides hugs, support, and guidance, my mom has given me a gene that doesn’t not allow me to hear the words “give up”.

She has recently retired from her career with honors. One of her accomplishments was improving the quality of health care for rural Saskatchewan residents. Now she continues to exude enthusiasm, incredible grace, and ageless beauty, while serving her community and being the cornerstone of her family. We love you mom.

Who-hoo to you, mom! Have fun, be good, be careful!

There will come a time when you believe everything is finished. That
will be the beginning.
I have never been good at coloring. I can of course stay in the lines but it never looks nice when I am done. Is this just something that takes time and practice or does someone know any tricks. I feel as a teacher, especially to young children, I should have these skills to be creative and artisitc. My mom is really good at these sort of things but she doesnt really know how to teach me. I have tried to learn as much as possible from her. Thank you for reading and take care everyone.
Do you know someone who needs help with prescription costs?

The Social Security Administration is asking that people help get the word out about this.... The slogan for the program is "I helped my mom save $3,600 on prescription drugs. You can too!

Taken from the Social Security website at http://www.socialsecurity.gov/prescriptionhelp/10163.htm

Do you know someone who needs help with prescription costs?

Now, you can help someone you care about apply for extra help with their Medicare prescription drug costs. Anyone who has Medicare can get Medicare Prescription Drug coverage. Extra help is available for some people with limited income and resources. It will pay for all or most of the monthly premiums and annual deductibles and lower the prescription co-payments related to their plan. The extra help could be worth up to $3,600 per year. Many people with limited income and resources qualify for these big savings and don’t even know it. To find out if someone is eligible, Social Security will need to know their income and the value of their savings, investments and real estate (other than their home). If they are married and living with their spouse, we will need this information for both of them.

To qualify for extra help they must have:

Income limited to $15,600 for an individual or $21,000 for a married couple living together.

Even if their annual income is higher, the ones you care about still may be able to get some help with monthly premiums, annual deductibles and prescription co-payments. Some examples where income may be higher include if they or their spouse:

Support other family members who live with them;

Have earnings from work; or

Live in Alaska or Hawaii; and

Resources limited to $11,990 for an individual or $23,970 for a married couple living together. Resources include such things as bank accounts, stocks and bonds. We do not count their house and car as resources.

The Spanish version of this information is available at http://www.socialsecurity.gov/prescriptionhelp/10986.htm
