Exploring Weather with Science Experiments in Preschool

Hello again and Happy Spring from Ayn at little illuminations!

We have been learning about weather in our class lately. Even though the calendar says Spring is here, it has still been unseasonably chilly in our area. We've talked a lot about the weather and how certain weather conditions happen. Our discussions have led to several science experiments in class.

We used shaving cream to simulate clouds and food coloring for water. When the clouds get full, the rain falls from the clouds.

We also used some recycled packing peanuts to explore this concept. The children cupped their hands while others filled their hands with the peanuts. When too many peanuts were put in, they fell down like rain.

Another way we explored rain was by putting a dish of ice over a vase filled with hot water. As the ice melted, condensation ran down the insides of the vase demonstrating a rain effect.

We explored wind by placing several items in front a fan to see which items would get blown by the wind (fan). It was interesting to hear the students' predictions and reasons why they thought certain items would blow away.

We charted the weather over a week long period. We've talked about how scientists have to collect data and record it over a period of time, so this was a good way to put that into practice. Here's a FREE printable of our weather chart!

In our art center, weather has been a popular interest. The children have been making a lot of pictures with rainbows and clouds.

We talked about the properties of wind and how that relates to flying a kite. Later, one of the kids made a little kite using items from our scrap box. Later, he took it outside and tried to fly it. For several days after that, the kids were making kites like crazy! (In fact, they are still making one or two daily!)

Pretty soon, kite flying was the highlight of our outdoor time!

Perspective: a KEY in guiding our children

PERSPECTIVE, RISK and EMBODIMENT

Happy November from Enrique!

When Galileo figured out that earth was not at the center of our universe, it was a shift in perspective that led him to that discovery. When we think about many of the important discoveries in our world, perspective is an important part of that journey. When we observe children, if we can observe them with a child-like sense of wonder, we can use questions to frame what they are either already doing and/or guide them in new discoveries of their own. BUT FIRST... we need to remember how to play, learn, and live like children ourselves. Enjoy this first video of adult early childhood educators modeling exactly that as they shift their perspective related to becoming curves with their bodies.

This second video is an example of adult learners taking the lines and curves they've been making and becoming academic vocabulary such as:

Rotate
Expand
Intersect
Contract
and more!

Think "Using play and our bodies to connect to academic learning (Common Core English Language, STEM) and social-emotional growth simultaneously!

The previous videos and the following images of adult educators becoming lines, curves and shapes with their bodies is a form of developmentally appropriate and play-based engineering games for preschool and kinder-age children. This Arts Integration strategy that has been used with thousands of young children.

What do you see in these images? Curves, Lines, Shapes? How many things can we make with our body. The Art of Embodiment; creating that which we are learning about with our body.

In addition to the shapes, educators at the 2012 Evolved Learning Retreat worked in small breakout groups and began to add engineering vocabulary to their shapes. Can you imagine how they might have been moving?

Perhaps some were rotating? Others elongating? Some expanding? So many options and so many potential answers and the use of both linear and abstract thought, all in a play-based approach!

From 2001 - 2004, the F.A.M.E. Foundation conducted research by observing young children. The results were incredible. If you want to see those results, you can find them in the book "Living Like a Child."

What emotion(s) would be associated with the images of these adults as they were "playing with purpose?" Why is it important for adults to reach inside and connect with their inner child?

This strategy and others have been researched and elevate children's ability to:

Think Critically

and simultaneously

Be Creative

Critical Thinking and Creativity can and must CO-EXIST!

Another way of saying this is:

Rigor and Joy can and must CO-EXIST!

This Arts Integration strategy is very simple and very flexible. Make it your own! One way of approaching it is as follows:

1. Over time introduce the idea of "Embodiment" to children. Become straight lines and curved lines with your bodies. They already love to use their bodies. All we need to do is guide with questions and/or suggestions. Have them become lines and curves individually at first. Once a sense of safety and community has been built, have them make lines and and curves in small groups of 2 and/or 3.

Note: Is this risky? Yes, but risk in appropriate ways leads to meaningful learning. The risk is that children will become so excited that their energy may be unleashed in uncontrolled ways! Try using the following statement when that happens... "Hold Your Energy!" This is something I learned from International Mime Artist Rick Wamer. It's very different from saying "Stop." Also, saying those words in a "commanding or controlling" voice, doesn't work very well. Use a playful voice and children play along. I've used this all over the country and in Latin America for the last decade and it's amazing how well it works.

2. Once children's knowledge of becoming lines and curves is grounded, have them become shapes and/or object they know and recognize (Squares, Circles, etc.).

3. Introduce vocabulary by having them become those words (rotate, invert, expand, etc.). This may seem like a stretch, but if you have them become the word and/or model it for them, they pick it up very quickly and love it. We don't want our children to have our vocabulary. We want them to have a vocabulary that surpasses ours!

You can take this to many other places, but this is a great first step in the direction of connecting children's learning to PERSPECTIVE! It also addresses many other academic areas of learning and when they're working in groups, social-emotional development.

Fall Fun: Leaf Explorations!

Hi! I'm Ayn and I am a Ga. Pre-K teacher, serving 4 and 5 year olds in an inclusive setting. I share my classroom adventures on my blog, little illuminations.

Fall has begun here and it's the perfect time to explore nature. We've recently discovered the book, "We're Going On A Leaf Hunt" by Steve Metzger written similarly to the favorite "We're Going On A Bear Hunt".

We enjoy taking nature walks and collecting interesting leaves, acorns, gumballs, pine cones and other natural items along the way. We often bring items back to class to put in our science center for independent exploration, as well as in our art center.

We measure our leaves, both with standard and non-standard measures. Of course, as a true scientist would do, we hypothesize about what we think our results will be. (This is a great time for me as a teacher to ask questions and try to prompt critical thinking.) We use math cubes to measure length.

We cover the leaf with pennies and try to guess how many it will take to cover it completely.

We explore the properties of buoyancy. Do leaves sink or float? What if we weight it down with pennies? How many pennies will make the leaf sink?

We explore how the leaves travel through the wind to land in various locations on our playground and recreate the wind with a fan.

On the playground, leaves and natural items are an integral part of our play.

Gumballs are everywhere this time of year, and feature prominently in our outdoor play. The children often call them "meatballs".

Sometimes, they are featured in our art, as well.

In our art center, we make leaf rubbings.

After I saw this idea on Pinterest, we painted the back of leaves and made leaf print paintings.

Some of the kids made nature wreaths with found items.

Sometimes, we take the art materials outside to create with what we discover there.

One of our favorite fall books is "Leaf Man" by Lois Ehlert.

The "Leaf Man" book often inspires the children to create their own "leaf people".

Leaf explorations are often a great way to help children begin to notice the world that surrounds them. I get as excited as the kids when I hear, "Hey, Mrs. Ayn, guess what I found?!" They are always excited to share their finds.

There are so many ways to explore the nature that surrounds us. Sometimes, a simple nature walk can lead to so much more!

Why do kids love science? It makes learning come alive! It's all about discovery that makes science so appealing. Children love to participate in exploring and discovering using their senses and imagination making substances change form, color, shape, scent, and texture. Halloween is the perfect time to teach and discover with simple science activities. I never met a child yet who wasn’t fascinated to watch and participate in matter changing shapes, mixing colors, creating textures, and adding scents. This is the perfect time to erupt, fizz and manipulate all kinds of matter.

Young children are not ready for abstract thought but learn by action – by hands-on participation and asking questions and finding out answers. It is important to focus activities on things they can see, hear, touch, taste and smell. Children are naturally curious and love to experiment, so now is the perfect opportunity to nurture a love of science. In Science and Sensory activities, children learn by finding answers to their many questions including: Why, how, when, where and what happens. Science explains questions and can be easily connected to reading, writing and math activities. Providing opportunities for children to have questions answered helps them make connections in their minds about their experiences. Help them find their own answers by providing opportunities to explore and discover. Sensory bins are the beginning foundation of science exploration.

The afternoon teacher and I went out for lunch at the end of the school year and planned out our themes for the 2012-2013 school year. I thought I would share them with you, so here goes:

August: Family and About Me

September: Community Helpers

October: Fall

November: Fairy Tales

December: Winter (also Jan Brett author study)

January: Construction/Transportation

February: At Night

March: Animals (Zoo for two weeks; Ocean for two)

April: Farm

May: Spring/Plants/Insects

(These dates are not exact, but I thought it would be simpler to present our themes month by month.) For science, we will do one theme per quarter, and they are as follows: 1st quarter — Five Senses and the Body; 2nd quarter — Water; 3rd quarter — Building Structures; 4th quarter — Plants. For math, we will use the Growing With Mathematics curriculum, and plug it in week by week.

Simple Magnets

It's the simple things in life that are so fun for kids! No lesson plans, no agenda...just magnets!

We had a ton of FUN with magnets today and I just used some basic materials that I already had at home. Magnets are a great way for kids to explore and learn by hands-on interaction. Children from all ages can enjoy learning how magnets work with different materials. Some of the best lessons are not scripted lessons, but rather opportunities for kids to discover on their own.

We used the following materials:

*pipe cleaners (cut into 1 inch pieces)

*brads

*paper clips

*a plastic jar for holding and containing the items

*a large magnet

(But you can use anything that is magnetic)

Here are some pictures of a preschooler and toddler enjoying simple magnets!

We began by experimenting and pulling the magnets up the plastic container...

Their curiosity got the best of them and they opened the jar to discover more!

Tell me a Story Tuesday!

The Cat in the Hat!

It is Dr. Seuss week! Every day this week we will read a different story by Dr. Seuss and do activities to go along with that book. Today we read The Cat in the Hat and The Cat in the Hat comes back!

For art the first thing we made was Thing one or Thing two. This was a fun activity because we also were able to create homemade puffy paint!!

First you add glue to a cup, next you add paint and stir it up good! Finally you add shaving cream and stir again. Keep adding shaving cream until the concoction is nice and fluffy! This was super fun and super easy!

The kids traced their hands and cut them out. They added their hands to the red bodies. They drew the faces and wrote thing one or thing two on the belly. Then they painted the blue puffy paint for hair. When it dried it was still puffy!

We had two art stations today they could make one or both. The other station was a simple cut and paste cat in the hat. This was a following directions craft.

For snack we made cat in the hat treats. We stacked red gummy lifesavers and frosting on ritz crackers to make a cute little hat.

We did a brain storm on what activities we could do on a rainy day. Tomorrow we will use that brainstorm for writer’s workshop. Since the book started out as a rainy day, we used that opportunity for a science experiment. We talked about the water cycle and where rain comes from. Our experiment was a visual of rain coming from the clouds. I filled up clear cups about ¾ full. On top of the water I allowed each child to squirt shaving cream. This was our cloud. I went around and dropped blue food coloring on top of the shaving cream and the kids were able to watch it “rain” in their cups.

in which I callously try to murder two plants

It’s spring, so we have been studying plants and our whole windowsill is covered with little cups full of dirt and sprouts of various sorts. A lot of teachers use their plants for science — I wonder what would happen if? What would happen if we didn’t water a plant? What would happen if we keep a plant in the dark? I never got around to it in the past, but decided to do it this year.

Little did I know my class would react with horror.

“It’s going to die!!!!”

“She’s going to kill the plants!”

“I don’t want the plant to die!”

There was much wailing and gnashing of teeth. At least one little boy went home and talked about it at dinner.

I forged ahead, but by Friday, it became clear that the plants cannot die. So we will rescue them once they start to look unhealthy, and bring them back from the brink.

Maybe then I will become the hero, rather than the evil villain.

A important lesson from Ooblick (and how to make it)

I am almost ashamed to say it; I have never used Ooblick in my classroom before! I know, I know, everyone and their neighbor has used Ooblick in preschool but I never have. Terrible. Maybe it is because all of the descriptions I have red of it have been non discrpt and somewhat blasé to say the least.

The Basics
If you have not used it before, do not underestimate the awesomeness of this substance. Ooblick is part corn starch and part water a good batch is comprised of about equal parts corn starch and water but it can vary. The batch above needed You will read here, and virtually everywhere else, Ooblick (sometimes spelled Oobleck) is a non- Newtonian fluid; This means that it exhibits characteristics of both a solid and a liquid. When there is pressure applied to Ooblick from any angle it acts as a solid, but when there is little or no pressure applied it acts like a liquid. When using your fingers or a spoon to scrape the bottom it feels like playdough (sort of) but there is no trail left behind your spoon or fingers, no indent made, because the portions of the liquid that pressure is not being applied to move freely just like water. It feels, with your hand submerged, as though you could grab a clump of it and shape it into a ball, but as soon as you pull it out it runs through your fingers! Children find this fascinating and I am not ashamed to say that I did as well; I perhaps enjoyed it just a tiny bit more than they did.

What can be learned from Ooblick
Let me warn you that the next part is wordy and lengthy, but I beg you to stick with me so that perhaps this rant will be useful to you:
This project was really an eye opener to me about the importance of having EXPERIENCES FOR CHILDREN TO ATTACH WORDS TO (a premise that I was first made to understand completely by Bev Bos). Now, am I doing this to teach children who are four years of age to walk around talking to other adults about "non- newtonian fluids?" No. Although, I am not loathe to the idea of throwing that word out to them, still, I do not expect them to pick it up. BUT, more importantly I am CONVINCED that having this experience will be valuable to them down the road. When I took chemistry in high school, (which seems like ages ago although it has not yet been a decade), I remember learning about Non- Newtonian fluids and in theory I suppose I knew what they were, I knew by description what they were and I even knew to give the examples of quick sand and something called Ooblick that I had never touched. By experience I somewhat knew what quick sand was like; I grew up on a farm so I knew that in the spring when I stepped "mud," (which on farms consists of water, dirt, cow manure, pieces of cow feed, and other odds and ends that the cows have stomped together), that was very wet and ankle deep (sometimes deeper), my boot would often get stuck in a "vacuum" which could be quite difficult to navigate. I also knew that when shoveling this substance that it fell off the shovel easily. However, I never played in it (for obvious reasons) and hence never took time to examine or ponder these qualities or associate them with the term "non newtonian." I never understood until the other day (THE OTHER DAY WHEN I PLAYED WITH OOBLICK!) the complete meaning of a non newtonian fluid; I understood more characteristics of non- newtonian substance and had an expanded understanding of the meaning of viscosity (I will spare you definitions in interest of relevance) and finally was able to equate non-newtonian substances with a colloidal suspension (something I should have been able to do by simple memorizing, but neglected to memorize...). However, experience would have saved me memorization and ultimately how much do we retain that we simply memorize anyway?
This brings hope to people like myself and I am sure other teachers who are looking a research on brain development and saying to themselves "and if I didn't get enough of this kind of experience as a child, will I ever be reconciled to the missing piece?" In this instance, yes, it is not too late! However, we, generally are looking to give our children a "head start," and what better way to do this than to lay a foundation for future learning.
Have you ever seen the shows where they have to transfer the weight of an entire house so that they can create a strong foundation because the original one was ill built and is crumbling? How much easier would it have been to built a strong foundation in the first place?
This is one activity and one example. It is only one, and yet that is something. President Obama, in his State of the Union address, recently called and expressed concern over the need for a better education system to yield brilliant scientists, mathematicians, and engineers to better serve our nation and society; This is where it starts, in Early Childhood Programs; It starts by giving children EXPERIENCES that are real to them and that set a foundation for their learning NOT by teaching them to learn and memorize things that they have no real understanding or experience with, but lasting experiences.

And besides all of this, it's fun!

Some pointers for using Ooblick in your class
1. Don't cover it, if you are keeping it. Just leave it open and add more water in the morning. If you cover it, then it will mold (Lisa Murphy, Ooey Gooey Handbook)
2. This makes some children's hands very dry- I had a little bit of baby oil on hand that we usually use for sensory play that I gave them on their hands to rub around to help moisturize them. I had parents bring in lotion for little hands that dried out after the first day, and gave gloves to kids whose hands were severely effected by it.
3. I plan to need at least 5 cups of corn starch for this project.
