Science, math, and more!

It has been SO long since I have last blogged it seems... I have been very, very busy with state testing and planning fun activities for my kids the rest of the year. Since I teach 4th grade, I still have science left, but I am still doing lots of review with that!

I have also been busily working on a 4th grade matter unit! I tried to be as detailed as possible in the TPT and TN descriptions but it is basically a unit introducing matter and vocabulary like weight, buoyancy, density, mass, area, volume, solids, liquids, gases, the metric system, and more! It can be found on TPT and TN! :) Hope you can check it out!

I also wanted to share a few things that have been happening in my classroom. We definitely did a lot of review and fun math games for the math state tests... one of my kids favorite activities was "Math Jeopardy" and practicing math on the white boards!

We also did fun projects with fractions... like this adorable freebie from Felisa Williams! She has wonderful math products that my kids and I thoroughly enjoy!

I am looking for more ideas for writing projects... writing is something I want to definitely keep up with my kids throughout the remainder of the year. I was in touch with my second grade teacher (and also my piano teacher) and she told me about an assignment I believe I did when I was in second grade... I asked for writing suggestions and the wonderful lady she is (following my facebook page and all!) she came up with this:

"Idea: Have the kids trace each other's feet on paper....then write a story about where their feet took them at one special time!!!"

So that is exactly what we did! With my own little spin on it... I think for next time I can even do two feet, and have them do a picture in the middle or something. But they had fun doing this and were excited to tell me about where their feet took them!

I promised I would be back to share some things we have been working on, so here I am!

In Math, we have been doing some serious geometry. We have been learning about kinds of lines, pairs of lines, the parts of a circle, and angles!

To help us review the different kinds of lines, I gave the students some sequins and cardstock and they created each kind of line. See pictures below!

We have also been studying the branches of our state government. After learning about them, they had to make a branches of government tree as a project grade.

(Aren't they super cute!?)

And then we FINALLY finished up our animal research papers and students were asked to create a poster to display their research. I gave them two sheets they were required to use to show what they learned.

As our Valentine's Day Party craft, I asked students to make Valentine people on their bags! They came out so cute!

This is just a little bit of what we have been doing! I will be back soon with some actual free downloads for some our Geometry activities and the Branches of Government tree template so you can do them too!

A Field Trip and Technology Goodies

My class is learning about the solar system and we recently went to the California Science Center to view the Space Shuttle Endeavour exhibit.

What an amazing experience.

A great follow up to this field trip was courtesy of Lakeshore Learning.

They sent me a box full of their educational software and I immediately explored the

Can Do Science Game Show Solar System for grades 3-4

You can choose to play with 1-4 teams and can also adjust the length of game.

Gooru Collections is a wonderful free iPad app for finding educational resources for Science and Math 5th-12th grade. This is done by searching through a variety of videos, games, quizzes, and more.

Anchor Chart Notebook SNEAK PEEK!!!

Do you use anchor charts?

I use both the handwritten ones and the ones I make on the computer.

My newest project is an anchor chart notebook. It will contain anchor charts for the following 3rd grade subjects: Reading, Language Arts, Writing, Math, Science, and Social Studies.

My plan is to put them in sections (according to the subject) in a binder. Then my students will have constant access to all of our anchor charts. They love getting up to reference them. And for those of you who have limited wall space or fire marshall issues, the notebook is a great alternative for you.

You wouldn't have to keep them in the binder either. If you're working on a specific topic, you could pull that anchor chart out and post it to your board.

I'm hoping to have the pack finished by Monday night. :)

Oreo Cookie Moon Phases

I was looking through my pictures for a picture of my son that I need for something I am making when I came across some pictures of a little math/science thing I did in my room a few years ago (this was pre-blogging days ;) ) Since the pictures were just sitting there, I thought I would share.

We were reading all about space in our language arts unit and, being the thematic planner I am, I decided to bring a little math and science into the mix. So what did we do?? Oreo Moon Phases!

I found a moon calendar in one of my teacher resource books. For a month (which actually ended up overlapping two months because of when we started), the students went outside and looked at the moon. They drew what they saw and tried their best to identify the type of moon that was present. The kids did a pretty good job at this, but we did have to do a little bit of checking on the site Moon Phases.

Once the calendar was done, the students then did a little number crunching. We were studying fractions at the time, so the students figured out the fraction of the month in which each phase of the moon was present. They also had to simplify that fraction. I had the students handwrite the chart, but I have created one for you just in case you want one to print off. You can get it here. (I realize there was a little error made on the part of the student on the number of times the full moon appeared on this page shown, but that is a scientific error...the math was the focus here ;) )

Next came the fun part. The students were given eight mini-Oreo cookies (I used mini because they, quite frankly, were cheaper. Buying enough cookies for 36 students was going to cost quite a bit ;) ) I had each student show the various moon phases using the white filling in each cookie. You can see in the picture that the new moon was the easiest to create! Then, using toothpicks, the kids molded each of the other phases. I also had them label the phases.

You can see from this picture that the Oreos did leak the grease all over the place. This was largely because when the projects were done, before I put them on the bulletin board, I stacked them on top of each other. The grease from the white filling actually was the culprit in this case. So I wouldn't recommend doing that ;) Otherwise, this was a fun project that I may just do again someday! Have you ever done this?

Teaching with Task Cards

Do you use task cards for teaching activities? You may want to consider doing so when you observe all their benefits.

Task cards are pretty self-explanatory: they are cards which contain tasks, or activities for students to complete. Teachers usually create a deck of these task cards for students to practice skills. They are good worksheet alternatives, can be adapted in to games, easy to make and readily accessible since so many teachers make and share them.

Here are some resources about task cards, if you're thinking about utilizing them:

Task-Cards.com, which gives a thorough explanation for various ways to use task cards, including for individual, small group and whole class activities. The site also provides details on several types of task cards and gives examples of each. There are also four sets of free task cards as a sample of the type of material sold on the site. Visit here for a one-stop shop for info on task cards!
Talbott's Teaching Trove contains a few sets of free task cards, including working with antonyms and rounding numbers. My favorite are the "7-Up" cards, which encourage students to turn short, lifeless sentences into descriptive ones.
The Third Wheel posted free math task cards to sharpen students' problem solving skills.
