We were going to have banana, pretzels, lemon, a sour patch kid or two, and probably a few m&ms. However, in traditional busy mom/teacher fashion I forgot to <strike>buy</strike> bring the tasting items to school. So what is a teacher to do? I quickly assessed what we had in the cooking drawer and went from there. We tasted a lot of different kinds of cookies, but they got the idea. We talked about what we were tasting and they had to decide if they liked it or not. If they liked it, then they circled the picture, if they did not like it, then they drew an X over it. One of my students just could not wait to get the vanilla sugar wafers. He was practically jumping out of his seat. I don't know if he even tasted it when I gave it to him. The kiddos really seemed to enjoy this activity (Food is always a great motivator).

Water play experiments: learning through play

We’ve been enjoying some water play this week, as requested by the children. They love the sensory play element and I love that it’s the cleanest messy play activity around! The addition of a few extra materials, and some question prompts from me, turned their water play into some science experiments and maths play.

Are you planning any Earth Day activities on April 22nd? Celebrated around the world, Earth Day is a great time to pause and reflect the impact you, your kids and your family have on the earth.

Last year we carried out an eco-audit of our play, looking at simple but effective ways we could align our activities . . . → Read More: Earth day activities: grow a meadow indoors!

Space play with water beads

Following on from our water bead science experiment, this week we’ve been enjoying some imaginative space play in our water bead sensory tub. With rockets, aliens and a lunar landscape the children have been stretching their imaginations and playing in a totally different world. Here’s how they took their water beads into outer space.

After ohhing and ahhing and wishing and dreaming every time we read a post from an American blogger, this week we discovered you can get hold of water beads in the UK. An order was placed, the water beads arrived and we were ready to play!
