He is technology geek <strike>just like his mamma</strike> and could probably teach anyone how to use a computer. I recently explained to A about Autism and how it is something he is diagnosed with. To help him understand I used this great video that I discovered a few months ago.

Great right? Anyway, I have been teaching in special education for 8 years now and if you follow my blog, you know that it is my love. (or at least, I think it is fun, some of my kiddos may beg to differ) This week since we are getting ready for Spring Break and Easter I decided that a bunny would be appropriate. I found this cute craftivity at I dream of First Grade and tried it out. Sarah has everything all ready to go, all the kids need to do is color and glue to make a super cute bunny. The best part, it is free!!! You can find her templates by clicking here. We did use a paper plate instead of cutting out the circles to help quicken the pace and reduce some of the cutting. The kids worked *** this and I think it came out super cute.

Oh no freebie!!

I had a special request from the wonderful paraprofessionals that I work with to make a version of oh no! that is not seasonal and that has both the upper and lowercase letters on the cards. So this is what I came up with. What do you think?

To get your own copy head on over to my TPT store and download it. Some of our class favorites include CandyLand, (we write our words on the cards and read the word before we move a space), Oh No!, Word Shapes.

Oh no! is a game one of my wonderful co-workers introduced me to a few years ago. Words are written on cards and then put into a container. I usually try to use a seasonal container such as a stocking in December, a pumpkin in October, etc. One or two of the cards say Oh No!or some variation of it (Oh Snow!, Oh pumpkin!, Oh turkey!). Students take turns drawing and reading the cards. If they get the word correct, they get to keep the card. If they draw Oh no! the student must put all of their cards back. You can get some of these games for free by checking out these blog posts.

Oh Turkey!

Ship Wreaked!

I also just added Oh Snow! to Teachers pay Teachers as my first payed item. It is only $1.50 and it is snowman themed. You can check that out here.

To play Word Shapes we have our words written on various shapes depending on the time of year. For example, in March, the words were written on shamrocks. We then spread the shamrocks on the floor and when the teacher calls out the word the students has to find it. Depending on the motor skills of the child they may just stand on it, pick it up, use a flashlight to point to it, or use a pointer to point to it.

Hurricane Sandy means no school and a freebie!

Color by the code

Well, I am home due to hurricane Sandy. The little corner of our town that my family and I live in does not flood, however, I can't say that for the rest of the town. I never experienced a flood day until I started teaching here. It is amazing how some of the town families have lived her for a 100 years and even after all of the floods they have experienced will never leave. Small town living is that awesome.

Since I am home I thought I would work on something I have been planning in my head. This is an activity to practice sight words or numbers (although really we could add math facts, etc to it also). Students color the squares by the code to reveal the answer to a question or riddle. I started because I want to continue working on numbers with my student that I made the monster cover up for. (If you missed it, click here to get your freebie!) This quick activity then spiraled into covering some of the sight words that our first grade students are working on.
I used Clip Art from my new favorite place for FREE graphics, .

I also used a new font called What the teacher wants from Kimberly Geswein Fonts. It was created with the input from another fantastic blog, What the Teacher Wants.

Please let me know what you think and if this works for your students. If the kiddos like them I will make more. Click the link below the picture to get your copy. Hope you are all staying safe and dry!

Oh turkey! The second set is numbers 1-20 along with turkeys programmed with dots for numbers 1 -10 so that students can also practice 1:1 correspondence. The third set is the Dolch pre-primer sight words. To play students pick out one turkey from a basket and read the letter/word/number. If they get it correct they keep the turkey. If a student pulls "Oh Turkey!", then they must put all of the turkeys back in the basket.

I will say my students LOVE this game! I can't wait to pull it out so we can start playing again. Click here to go to my TPT store and download it for free. You can also find other Thanksgiving freebies by checking out the freebie tab up top!

behavior chart freebie!

Behavior Clip Chart

I have had a lot of requests for my behavior chart lately so I decided to update it and add it as a freebie. I wanted to share a freebie with you. I made this for the young lady I tutor(she is going into 1st grade) and she loved it. I added a pre-made die template this time and also the words to add to your own die. You can click here to check it out in Google Docs. If you have not seen the other pirate version you can check it out here.
