I realized that I have really gotten away from just sharing ideas, which was my original intention upon the creation of this blog. With that said, I have decided to make a change, or challenge to myself that I when I post things for my shops that I will also share ideas of how to use the product or just ideas for teaching that topic in general. I have also gotten away from sharing as many freebies as I used to.

Now, when I make a new product, I try to create a little something from that unit to give away for free since you guys are so awesome and you totally deserve it!

So, my next creation is these Genre Posters. These bad boys are all over TPT and TN, but I wanted to make a set the way I wanted them to look and I want to share them with you!

I was thinking about how to go about introducing the genres and I thought it might be a good idea to just start with what is the difference between fiction and non fiction and make an anchor chart. Students share their thoughts and you add to the board. Then see if they can work together with a partner or a group to brainstorm which genres they think are fiction and non fiction. Some will be obvious, but this way the students start thinking about them. I would list the genres on a the Promethean Board and let them sort. You could even type out all of the genres onto cards, print and cut them out, and then let them sort on their desks with a partner.

Another idea I saw was that you could do sort of like a genre pop quiz. Have students write Fiction or Non Fiction on a card/whiteboard/etc...and then call out a genre. Students must hold up the matching card. It's quick, easy, and you'll be able to see who still just doesn't know their genres!

We do Reading Workshop so it's important they know which genre they're reading so they can fill out their reading log. I have a sheet in the front of their Reading notebooks with a list of all the genres and a definition to help them out in case they aren't sure. Many of my books are already labeled with the genre, but some are still vague.

And finally, if you want another a fun way to assess their genre knowledge, play Genre BINGO.

I have made it an editable powerpoint with flattened images so you can either have the students write in the genres on the card, or you can type them in. All you have to do is add a text box wherever you want to type!

If you wish to purchase the posters, they are available in both shops!

But I'm not FINISHED! I was visiting Pitner's Potpourri recently and came across this great idea for reviewing Place Value that she called a Place Value Marathon. See her post here.

I took this idea and created one to meet my classroom needs. My marathon works on place value through the hundred thousands, so this is great for the upper elementary and can be adapted for lower elementary.

Click on the file to download!

Free For All Friday!

I am so sorry I didn't get around to posting last night! We have been working on place value since school started! The kids always seem to struggle with reading and writing numbers through the hundred thousands, especially because I have so many ESOL kids, so I created some fun resources to help students practice and to help you teach! These resources are geared towards upper elementary, but are easily adaptable to my primary friends out there!

Let me know if you have any questions! I will also be sharing pictures of my finished classroom since I didn't have any good ones on for the Classroom Tour!

My first back to school book is Crysanthemum. I love this book for the first day because it teaches about accepting the differences in others. Many of my students have names that I can't even pronounce so it's great because other students can learn that it's okay to have a unique name. There are tons of activities you can do with this book such as graphing your class names, doing making words with your name, sorting names, etc...

The second book I like to read is First Day Jitters. I enjoy having students discussing what jitters are and then writing down their own first day jitters. We always share them after!

I realize that the other two books are commonplace in elementary classrooms so this should be a bit of a change. My absolute favorite back to school book to read is Oh, The Places You'll Go! by Dr. Suess. There are soooooo many amazing things that you can do with this book and I'm going to share a few things that I am going to do this year since our classroom theme is Oh, the Places We'll Go in Third Grade!

* Have students write down their academic or behavioral goals for the year.
* Ask students to paint a picture of a place they want to go and write a few sentences about where they want to go, why they want to go there, and what they'll do there! (I will be doing this and hanging them outside my classroom!)
* Play Balloon Geography - Start by reviewing geography facts (continents, oceans, landforms, states, cities, etc.) Blow up a balloon and have the class stand in a circle. The object of the game is to keep the balloon from touching the floor, but every time a player hits the balloon they must name a geography fact. If they can't say one fast enough, they are out! I would focus on one topic at a time. Play one round of continents and oceans, then landforms, etc... This is a great way to review at the beginning of the year!
* Have students analyze different parts of the poem and discuss what they mean. For example, "You can get all hung up in a prickle-ly perch. And your gang will fly on. You'll be left in a Lurch."
* Give students a copy of the words to the book and highlight the words that speak to them and how it relates to their own lives.
* Make a book jacket for the book based on the students own uniqueness and goals.

These are just a few fun things you can do with this book! Here is my outside bulletin board that I will hang their watercolor paintings.

And here are the pictures of my classroom I promised! This is the view of my classroom when you first walk in.

This is from the other side of the front of the room looking at the back.

This is from the back left corner looking to the front.

And this is from the back right corner looking to the front.

Here is my essential questions board at the front.

Well, I hope you have enjoyed my activities and classroom photos!
